Anonymous ChatGPT: what each method hides, and from whom
The Morse teamPublished 7 min read
No, ChatGPT isn't anonymous by default. A signed-in account ties every chat to your name, email, and payment details, and even signed out, OpenAI receives your IP address and every word you type. An anonymous ChatGPT session is possible in degrees: logging out hides your account, Temporary Chat keeps a chat out of your history and out of training, a VPN hides your IP address, and a proxy like Duck.ai or Morse's Anonymous mode sends your message under someone else's account so the model provider doesn't know who sent it.
Each method hides something different from someone different. We read OpenAI's privacy policy and help center and DuckDuckGo's Duck.ai terms on October 19, 2026, and set out below what each method hides, what it leaves exposed, and who still knows it's you.
Is ChatGPT anonymous?
Not when you're signed in. OpenAI's privacy policy (dated September 10, 2026) says an account comes with "your name, contact information, account credentials, date of birth, payment information, and transaction history." If you added a phone number, it stays: OpenAI's consumer data page says "You cannot unlink a phone number from an existing OpenAI account."
The same privacy policy describes what every visit sends, account or not:
- Log data: "your Internet Protocol address, browser type and settings, the date and time of your request, and how you interact with our Services."
- Device information: "the name of the device, operating system, device identifiers, and browser you are using."
- Location: OpenAI determines "the general area from which your device accesses our Services based on information like its IP address."
Signing up with a work email has a side effect. OpenAI says it "may share the fact that you have an account and certain account information, such as your email address, with your employer or organization."
Can you use ChatGPT without an account?
Yes. ChatGPT works signed out, and that's the closest thing OpenAI offers to an anonymous ChatGPT. It hides your name and email, but not the rest:
- Training is on unless you change it. OpenAI's data controls page says to open Settings and turn off "Improve the model for everyone" when signed out, and "Your choice is saved in that browser." Clear your cookies or switch browsers and you have to do it again.
- Your IP and device still arrive. Signed out, OpenAI still collects log data and device information, and the privacy policy says cookies "help maintain your preferences across sessions if you're not logged in."
- You may still see ads. OpenAI's ads help page says "Ads shown in logged-out experiences are appropriate for all audiences." Our page on ChatGPT ads and how to turn them off has the rest.
- Stricter rules and fewer features. When OpenAI opened signed-out use in 2024, it said it added "additional content safeguards for this experience" and that saving history, sharing chats, and custom instructions need an account (OpenAI). OpenAI now labels that post outdated, so check the app for today's limits.
OpenAI doesn't publish how long it keeps signed-out chats. We looked in its privacy policy, data controls, and retention pages and found no period specific to them.
Is ChatGPT's Temporary Chat anonymous?
No. Temporary Chat hides a conversation from your history, not from OpenAI. OpenAI's temporary chat page says a temporary chat "stays out of your chat history and is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary." It's still made inside your account, though, and:
- "OpenAI may keep a copy of a temporary chat for up to 30 days for safety purposes."
- A Personalized temporary chat "can use your existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins." Choose Unpersonalized before your first message if you don't want that.
- "ChatGPT may still use information from prior conversations for limited safety and security purposes," even with memory off.
- On eligible Enterprise accounts, temporary chats "are available through the Compliance API for 30 days."
Temporary Chat is a good fix for a shared laptop or an untidy history. It won't stop OpenAI from knowing which account sent the chat.
Does a VPN make ChatGPT anonymous?
Only for your IP address. A VPN replaces your address with the VPN's, so the general area OpenAI works out from your IP becomes the VPN server's. Everything else stays the same. If you're signed in, your account says who you are. Signed out, your browser and device details still arrive, and the cookies OpenAI uses for signed-out preferences can link one visit to the next. Your words reach OpenAI either way.
You've also moved your trust to the VPN company, which sees your real address and when you connect. Choose one whose own policy you've read.
What's the most anonymous way to use ChatGPT?
A proxy that sends your message under its own account. DuckDuckGo's Duck.ai is one, and it earns credit for how much its own terms commit to. Its help page lists OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5.4 mini among the free models. Its privacy terms, last updated October 1, 2026, say:
- "All metadata that contains personal information (for example, your IP address) is removed before sending Prompts to underlying model providers."
- If you put personal details in a prompt, "no one can tell (including us and the underlying model providers) whether it was you personally submitting the Prompts or someone else."
- Providers agree to "not using Prompts and Outputs to develop or improve their models" and to delete what they receive "at most within 30 days, with limited exceptions for safety and legal compliance."
- Recent chats are "saved locally on your device," and the optional Sync & Backup keeps the decryption key "only stored on your devices."
DuckDuckGo still sees your connection. Its privacy policy says it uses your IP address "only temporarily to deliver content to you and, for security, to ensure you're not a malicious bot."
Morse's Anonymous mode works the same way for GPT, Claude, and Gemini. We cover it below.
What each method hides, and from whom
Built from OpenAI's and DuckDuckGo's own pages, read October 19, 2026, and Morse's privacy policy.
| Method | Who still knows it's you | Does OpenAI get your IP? | Does OpenAI read your words? | How long OpenAI may keep it | Trained on? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT, signed in | OpenAI: name, email, date of birth, payment, phone if added | Yes | Yes | Until you delete it, then within 30 days, with exceptions | Yes, unless you opt out |
| ChatGPT, signed out | OpenAI sees your IP, device, and cookies, but no account | Yes | Yes | No period published | Yes, unless you turn it off in that browser |
| Temporary Chat | OpenAI: it's on your account | Yes | Yes | Up to 30 days | No, while it stays temporary |
| VPN, signed in | OpenAI (your account) and the VPN company (your real IP) | No, the VPN's | Yes | Same as signed in | Same as signed in |
| Duck.ai | DuckDuckGo sees your IP briefly; OpenAI sees DuckDuckGo | No | Yes, without knowing it's you | "At most within 30 days," with exceptions | No, by agreement with providers |
| Morse, Anonymous mode | Morse knows your account; OpenAI sees Morse | No | Yes, without knowing it's you | A limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy | Not by Morse; OpenAI's own policy applies |
| Morse, E2EE mode | Morse knows your account but can't read the chat | OpenAI isn't involved | No; only a verified enclave can read it | Nothing reaches OpenAI | No |
What can't an anonymous ChatGPT session hide?
What you write. A proxy hides the sender, not the message, and a message can name you. Duck.ai's terms say personal information you submit "may be reproduced in the Outputs."
OpenAI's consumer data page says "trusted service providers" may access user content "to improve model performance (unless you have opted out)." A lawsuit filed in September 2026 alleges that contractors reading ChatGPT chats for this could see a summary of a user's past chats that sometimes hinted at where they live. Those claims are unproven, and we go through them in our page on ChatGPT Project Lily.
How Morse lets you use GPT without OpenAI knowing it's you
Every way of using ChatGPT itself still hands OpenAI one of two things that point back to you: your account or your connection. Morse takes both out of the request.
- Anonymous, to ask GPT, Claude, or Gemini without the provider knowing it's you. Our proxy removes your account, email, and IP address and sends the message under Morse's own account. OpenAI gets the question, not who asked it. The provider still sees the message and may keep it for a limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy, so leave your name, employer, and other details out of what you type.
- Private, for chats no host should keep. Private mode is the default for new chats and runs open-weight models like DeepSeek, Kimi, and GLM, plus xAI's Grok, on hosts that agreed to keep nothing. Your identity is stripped here too.
- E2EE, for words no one should read. When the message itself is the risk, start the chat in E2EE. Your browser verifies the secure enclave's proof, then encrypts the message so only that enclave can open it, and Morse's servers relay text they can't read. It runs open-weight models only, and it depends on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed. Here's how end-to-end encrypted AI chat works.
In every mode, your chat history is stored in your browser, encrypted, and Morse's servers don't keep your messages or log what you write. Morse doesn't train AI on your chats, sell your data, or show ads. Your Morse account holds your sign-in details, plan, and usage, with no chat content. For the wider picture of who can see what, read our guide to using AI privately.
You can try Morse without an account: a message from the Morse home page opens a guest chat that's kept in the tab's memory and never saved. When you want to keep chats, sign up free with an emailed code or your Google account.
Common questions
Does ChatGPT know who I am if I'm not logged in?
Not by name, but it isn't blind. OpenAI's privacy policy says it collects your IP address, browser, and device details and works out your general area from your IP, and cookies keep your preferences between visits. Anything you type that identifies you does the rest.
Can OpenAI see my IP address?
Yes, whenever you connect to ChatGPT directly, signed in or not. A VPN swaps in the VPN's address, and a proxy like Duck.ai or Morse's Anonymous mode removes it before the request reaches the model provider.
Does using ChatGPT anonymously stop training on my chats?
Not by itself. Signed-out chats can be used for training unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in that browser's settings. Duck.ai says its model providers agree not to train on prompts, and Morse doesn't train AI on your chats.
Can I remove my phone number from my ChatGPT account?
No. OpenAI's help center says "You cannot unlink a phone number from an existing OpenAI account." If you deleted your account, OpenAI says it removes the number after 30 days, unless the account was disabled for a violation.
