Morse is for adults, and Characters is interactive fiction. Stories here can go to dark places, and that's allowed. This page explains how to reach help, what we do when someone may be at risk for real, and what isn't allowed.
If you need help now
If you're thinking about suicide or hurting yourself, please talk to someone now. It's free and confidential.
- In the US: call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or text HOME to 741741 to reach the Crisis Text Line.
- Anywhere else: findahelpline.com lists free helplines around the world, by phone, text, and chat.
- In immediate danger: call your local emergency number, such as 911 in the US, 999 in the UK, or 112 in the EU.
Our self-harm protocol
We don't read or store your chats (see the Privacy Policy), so everything below works without us seeing what you write.
- A check in the app. When a message you send in a character chat reads like you're thinking about suicide or self-harm in real life, the app shows crisis lines beside the chat. The check runs on your device. We're told only that crisis lines were shown, and we keep a count of that with no account or message attached, for the yearly report California requires.
- Characters step out of the story. Every character is told that pain, injury, and death inside a story are fiction, and to play on. But if you say, as yourself, that you're thinking about suicide or hurting yourself, the character stops the scene, tells you where to find help, and never encourages it. You can go back to the story whenever you want.
- Not a substitute for help. No check catches everything, and a character isn't a counselor. If you're struggling, please reach out to a person or one of the lines above.
What isn't allowed
Sections 6 and 7 of the Terms of Service set out what isn't allowed. Above all: no sexual content involving minors, or anyone presented as one, in any mode, which we report as the law requires. No intimate content of real people without their consent, no harassment, and no using the Service to plan harm to anyone.
Adults only
Morse is for people 18 and older, and you confirm your age when you sign up. NSFW is off by default and only for adults who turn it on. Every character in our cast is an adult, and characters are told to refuse sexual content involving anyone under 18 in every mode. We close any account we learn belongs to a minor. If you think a minor is using Morse, tell us at hello@trymorse.ai.
