Does ChatGPT have ads? Every way to turn them off

The Morse teamPublished 7 min read

Yes. As of October 2026, ChatGPT shows ads to people on the Free and Go plans, in the US since February 9, 2026 and since then in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, 31 European countries, and India. To turn them off you can switch Free to OpenAI's Ads-Free option (fewer messages, no image generation or deep research), use a Temporary Chat, or pay for Plus at $20 a month. Turning off ad personalization doesn't remove ads.

We read OpenAI's ads help page (updated October 18, 2026), its pricing page, its privacy policy, and its announcements on October 19, 2026. Below are the exact steps for each option, what each costs you, and what the ad system reads to pick an ad.

Why does my ChatGPT have ads?

Because of your plan. OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT help page says "Ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads." The pricing page puts it plainly under Go, the $8 plan: "This plan may include ads." Paying something, then, doesn't take ads away. You'd need Plus or higher.

Two other things decide it:

  • Where you are. Ads run "in select regions," and OpenAI adds countries over time (see below).
  • Your age. OpenAI says it doesn't show ads to accounts "identified as belonging to users under 18, based on account-level age information and age prediction where available."

Logging out doesn't avoid them either. The same help page says "Ads shown in logged-out experiences are appropriate for all audiences." When the test began, OpenAI's February announcement limited it to "logged-in adult users."

You'll see "one ad unit" below a response, labeled and separate from the answer. OpenAI is also testing a multi-image ad that appears while ChatGPT generates an image and disappears when the image is done.

Where and when did ChatGPT ads start?

From OpenAI's own posts, read October 19, 2026:

  • January 16, 2026: OpenAI said it would test ads for Free and Go, and launched Go at $8 a month in the US (OpenAI).
  • February 9, 2026: Ad testing started in the United States (OpenAI).
  • March 26, 2026: OpenAI said pilots would start "in the coming weeks" in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (same post).
  • August 11, 2026: Ads launched in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea (same post).
  • August 18, 2026: OpenAI said ads would reach 31 European countries "next week," including Germany, France, Spain, and Italy (OpenAI).
  • August 27, 2026: OpenAI said it would start showing ads on Free and Go in India (TechCrunch). India is listed as available on OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page.

In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, OpenAI says personalized ads "are not initially available," so ads there rely on the chat you're in.

OpenAI's pages disagree about Go. Its What is ChatGPT Go? page still says "We may start testing ads in ChatGPT Go in the future," while the ads help page, the pricing page, and the European announcement all list Go with Free as a plan that shows ads.

How do you turn off ads in ChatGPT?

Each option costs you something different.

Switch the Free plan to Ads-Free

OpenAI's steps, from the ads help page:

  1. Open Settings in ChatGPT.
  2. Select Ads controls.
  3. Tap Change plan to go ad-free.
  4. Choose Reduce message limits.
  5. Confirm.

You get "No ads," along with "Lower usage limits" and "Reduced feature access," for example "no access to some tools like image generation or deep research." When you hit a limit, a banner offers Upgrade or Show ads. Ads-Free is a Free-plan option only, so a Go subscriber has to drop to Free or move up to Plus. The option shows only where ads are being tested.

Use a Temporary Chat

OpenAI says: "Temporary Chats will not show ads." Open a new chat, select Temporary, and choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before your first message (OpenAI). The chat stays out of your history and doesn't update memory, and you can't reopen it from history once you leave. OpenAI may keep a copy "for up to 30 days for safety purposes."

Upgrade to Plus or Pro

Plus is $20 a month and Pro starts at $100, per the pricing page on October 19, 2026. Both are ad-free with no reduced limits. Paying doesn't change the training setting, which we cover in does ChatGPT train on your data.

Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts don't show ads either, but they belong to your employer or school, and OpenAI's privacy policy says their administrators "may access and control your OpenAI account, including being able to access your Content."

What doesn't remove ads

In Settings > Ads controls, the Personalize ads toggle "can make ads less tailored, but it doesn't remove ads," in OpenAI's words. With it off, "you will still see ads based on the context of your current chat thread." The Past chats and memory toggle only stops older conversations and memories from feeding ad choices. Hide ad in an ad's three-dot menu dismisses that one ad.

What data do ChatGPT ads use?

Your conversation, first. OpenAI's ads system considers "the context and intent of your current conversation," and with ads personalization on, "select signals from your broader ChatGPT experience." The help page lists those signals as your current thread "including personalized model responses," how you interact with ads, and "Past chats and memory."

OpenAI says advertisers don't get any of it: "Advertisers never receive your chats, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information." They get "aggregated reporting such as views and clicks." OpenAI also says "we never sell your data to advertisers."

Data also flows from advertisers to OpenAI. OpenAI's privacy policy, dated September 10, 2026, says it receives information from advertisers to measure ads shown to Free and Go users: "For example, we could receive information about purchases you make from these advertisers." Its European announcement lists the tools advertisers use for this, "the OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API, and third-party measurement integrations."

Other rules OpenAI states on its ads page:

  • Sensitive topics: ads are "not eligible to appear near sensitive topics, including personal health, mental health, or politics," and OpenAI doesn't allow political ads.
  • Answers: "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers," and ads "run on separate systems from our chat model."
  • Deleting ads data: Delete ads data clears your ad history and topics, which are then "retained for up to 30 days before being removed from our servers."
  • Messaging an advertiser: if you message an advertiser through an ad, "the advertiser will only see the messages you send them directly."

An ad-free ChatGPT alternative

On ChatGPT, ads are how Free and Go get paid for, and the ad system works by reading what you say to pick an ad. Every way out is a trade: fewer messages, a chat you can't keep, or $20 a month. Morse doesn't have that trade, because it doesn't show ads on any plan, including Free. It doesn't sell your data, has no advertising trackers or third-party analytics, and doesn't train AI on your chats, so no ad system reads your conversation and there's no personalization switch to manage.

  • Ask GPT and Claude without the ad profile. The Free plan gives you 15 messages a day with GPT-6 Luna, Claude Haiku 5.5, GLM 5.3 Flash, and more, plus three images a day and web search. For GPT, Claude, and Gemini, Anonymous mode applies: our proxy removes your account, email, and IP address and sends your message under Morse's own account, so the provider gets it without knowing it's you. It still sees the message and may keep it for a limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy.
  • Keep your history without feeding anything. Your chats are stored in your browser, encrypted, not on Morse's servers. Clearing your browser deletes them, and Morse can't recover them, so keep anything you'll need.
  • Go further for personal topics. Private mode, the default for new chats, runs open-weight models on hosts that agreed to keep nothing. E2EE mode encrypts each message on your device so only a verified secure enclave can read it, and Morse's servers relay text they can't read.

Pro is $19 a month and adds unfiltered models and end-to-end encrypted chats, still with no ads. See what we collect in our privacy policy.

Common questions

Does ChatGPT Plus have ads?

No. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts don't get ads. Go, the $8 plan, can show them.

Does deleting my ads data delete my chats?

No. OpenAI says Delete ads data clears your ads history and topics and "does not affect your chats." It can take up to 30 days for that data to leave OpenAI's servers.

Do ChatGPT ads show to teenagers?

OpenAI says it doesn't show ads to accounts identified as under 18, using the age on the account and its age prediction model, which looks at signals like how long the account has existed and the topics a person discusses.

Can I ask ChatGPT about an ad I see?

Yes. ChatGPT can't see your ads by default, but the three-dot menu on an ad has an Ask ChatGPT option that shares that ad into the chat. If reference chat history is on, that conversation can come up in later chats.

Ask what you actually want to ask.

Over 30 models, characters, and images, with every chat encrypted and kept on your device. Free to start.
