Is Gemini Live private? What Google keeps from your voice, camera, and screen
The Morse teamPublished 8 min read
As of November 2026, Gemini Live is private from other people but not from Google. If you're 18 or over, Google saves your Gemini Live transcripts, audio, camera video, and screenshares to your Google Account for 18 months by default, and it uses the transcripts to improve its services, including its AI models. Your voice, video, and screen recordings stay out of training unless you tick a separate box, which is off by default.
We read Google's Gemini Live help pages for Android and iPhone, the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub (last updated October 26, 2026), the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice (last updated October 13, 2026), the Gemini Apps Activity page, the work and school page, and the Google AI plans page on November 4, 2026. Google deserves credit for listing exactly what a Live chat leaves in your activity, down to separate icons for audio, camera video, and shared screens.
Gemini Live privacy at a glance

|---|---|---|---|
| Live transcripts, audio, camera video, and screenshares | Saved to Gemini Apps Activity while Keep Activity is on, which it is by default if you're 18 or over | Auto-deleted after 18 months; you can pick 3 or 36 months, or never | |
| Transcripts and uploads used for training | Yes, while Keep Activity is on | As long as they stay in your activity | Privacy Hub |
| Improve Google services with your audio and Gemini Live videos & screenshares | Off, and it needs Keep Activity on | Covers recordings already stored and future ones once ticked | |
| Live chats with Keep Activity off | Your choice | Up to 72 hours in your Google Account | Privacy Hub |
| Recordings and chats picked for human review | Sent to reviewers disconnected from your account | Up to three years | Privacy Hub |
| Work or school account | Keep Activity on, and only your administrator can turn it off | 18 months by default, set by your administrator |
Does Gemini Live record your voice?
Yes, and Google keeps the recording when Keep Activity is on. Google's activity page says that for Gemini Live chats, "the transcripts, audio, files, images, & YouTube videos, and any video or screenshares you choose to share with Live are saved in Gemini Apps Activity if your Keep Activity setting is on" (Google). The Gemini Apps Privacy Notice lists "Transcripts and recordings of your interactions with Gemini Live (including audio, video and screens you share with Live)" among the data Google collects (Privacy Hub).
Gemini Live didn't always keep audio. In February 2025, Google emailed Live users that in the updated version "your audio, video, and screenshares are stored in your Gemini Apps Activity (if it's on)," according to 9to5Google, which reported that Google's December 2024 support page had said "Live voice and audio data is not saved to Google servers at this time."
Turning Keep Activity off shortens the stay without ending it. Google says "If Keep Activity is off, your Gemini Live chats are stored in your Google Account for up to 72 hours so Google can provide the service and process any feedback" (Privacy Hub).
Does Google train AI on your Gemini Live chats?
On what you say, yes, by default. The Privacy Hub says "If Keep Activity is on, transcripts of your Live chats and uploads you share with Gemini Live are used to improve Google services, including AI models" (Privacy Hub). Keep Activity is on by default for adults, as we cover in is Gemini private.
The recordings themselves are handled differently. Google says "Your Gemini Live audio, video and screenshares are not used to improve Google services by default" (Privacy Hub). That line covers the sound of your voice and the frames of your camera and screen. The words you spoke are a transcript, and the same hub says transcripts "are covered by the Keep Activity setting," so the text of everything you said follows the training default for typed chats.
If you tick the recordings box, Google uses your audio, video, and screenshares "to improve and develop our services (including training generative AI models)," including recordings "already stored in Gemini Apps Activity and added in the future" (Privacy Hub). Unticking it later stops future recordings being used, "unless you choose to send Google feedback."
Do humans listen to Gemini Live recordings?
Some of them, if you've ticked the recordings box, since Google says "Some audio and Gemini Live videos and screenshares are reviewed by human reviewers," with that activity disconnected from your Google Account (Privacy Hub). Transcripts go to reviewers under Keep Activity, on the same rules as typed chats, which we cover in is Gemini private.
Is Gemini Live always listening?
No, but it can start, and keep going, when you don't expect it. Google says Gemini waits "in standby mode until they're activated, for example when they detect 'Hey Google,'" and "Audio recordings may begin a few seconds before activation" (Privacy Hub). A noise that sounds like "Hey Google" can set it off, and Google says transcripts of those recordings "are also used to help reduce unintended activations for everyone."
Once a Live chat starts, it can keep running out of sight. Google's Android help page says "You can use your phone and other apps while you're Live with Gemini," and that "If Gemini on lock screen is on, you can continue your Live chat after you lock your phone" (Google). You can't start Gemini Live from a locked screen. To stop the microphone, tap Hold or End. To stop "Hey Google" opening it in the first place, follow the steps in how to turn off Gemini on Android.
What does Gemini Live see when you share your camera or screen?
Your whole screen, and the camera until you leave. Google says "When you share your screen, your full screen is shared with Gemini" (Google), so close anything you don't want Gemini to see before you start. Screen sharing stops when you put Live on hold or lock your phone. The camera turns off when you leave the Gemini app or your screen locks.
Mute doesn't stop sharing. On Android, Google says "When your Live chat is muted, your device's microphone is muted but your video or screen continues to be shared" (Google). Tap Hold or End instead, or swipe down and tap Stop sharing on the "Screen Sharing" card.
Google also asks you to think about the people around you. Its Live page says "Respect others' privacy and ask permission before recording or including them in a Live chat" (Google).
Which switch covers which part of a Gemini Live chat?
A Live chat is several kinds of data, and Google's settings split them. We put each part beside the switch that controls it, from Google's own pages, read November 4, 2026.
| Part of a Live chat | Saved by default? | Used to train by default? | The switch that changes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| The words you say (transcript) and files you upload | Yes, for 18 months | Yes | Keep Activity, at gemini.google.com under Settings & help, then Activity (Google) |
| Your voice (audio) | Yes, for 18 months | No | Improve Google services with your audio and Gemini Live videos & screenshares, on the same page (Google) |
| Your camera and screen | Yes, for 18 months | No | The same audio box (Privacy Hub) |
Memory and connected apps follow your typed Gemini settings, since Google says "Gemini Live follows the same permissions that you choose when you chat with Gemini" (Google), and we cover both in is Gemini private. Google's Gemini Live overview says Live can search your Gmail and Google Drive and control smart home devices once they're connected (Google).
How do you delete Gemini Live recordings?
Delete the chat's entry in Gemini Apps Activity, and its recordings go with it. Google says "If you delete activity for a Gemini Live chat, any related audio, transcript, videos, and screenshares for that activity are also deleted" (Google). Every delete option, and what each leaves behind, is in how to delete Gemini history.
Is Gemini Live private on a work or school account?
Your administrator decides, because Google says Keep Activity on those accounts "can only be turned off by your account's Workspace administrator" (Google), as we cover in is Gemini private. Live on a work or school account can use only Google Calendar, Google Keep, and Google Tasks among connected apps (Google).
How Morse keeps your questions out of your Google Account
Every table above starts in the same place. Whether you talk, show your camera, or share your screen, a Live chat lands in your Google Account as activity, beside your Gmail, Calendar, and the rest. Morse is a web app that keeps your chat history in your browser, encrypted, and locks it when you sign out.
On Morse:
- The 18-month transcript. Morse's servers don't keep your messages or log what you write, so there's no account history building up.
- Training on what you said. Morse doesn't train AI on your content, sell your data, or show ads. There's no Keep Activity setting and no recordings box to check.
- Three years with reviewers. No archive of your chats sits on Morse's servers for anyone to open, and since we don't store chats, we usually have very little to give authorities.
- Deleting. Deleting a chat or clearing your browser removes it for good, and Morse can't recover it, so keep anything you need.
Then pick a mode for the question you'd have asked out loud:
- Anonymous, to ask Gemini itself with no Google Account behind the question. Pick Gemini from the model list, and our proxy removes your account, email, and IP address and sends the message under Morse's own account. Google sees the words without knowing it's you, and may keep them for a limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy. Describe what's on your screen in words, and leave out names and account numbers.
- Private, for everyday questions no host should keep. New chats start here. Open-weight models like DeepSeek, Kimi, and GLM, plus xAI's Grok, answer under the zero data retention agreements Morse has with its inference, search, and other providers, so the hosts agreed to keep nothing.
- E2EE, for what you'd never say near a microphone. Your browser checks the secure enclave's hardware attestation, then encrypts the message so only that enclave can read it, and our servers relay ciphertext they can't read. It rests on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed. Here's how end-to-end encrypted AI chat works.
Our privacy policy lists what the Morse account itself holds: sign-in details, plan, balance, and a usage ledger with no chat content.
So is Gemini Live private enough for you?
- Training on your words: turn off Keep Activity, knowing each Live chat still stays 72 hours. Morse doesn't train AI on your chats.
- Your voice, camera, and screen: leave the recordings box unticked, and tap Hold or End rather than Mute when you're done sharing.
- People nearby: ask before you include them, as Google's own page asks.
- A work or school phone: assume your administrator keeps 18 months, and keep personal questions on a personal account.
- Anything you'd rather not say aloud: type it on Morse instead, in E2EE for anything no one should read.
You can send a first message from Morse's home page without an account, or start free with no card needed. End-to-end encrypted chats come with Pro, at $19 a month.
Common questions
Is Gemini Live free?
Yes. As of November 2026, Google's plans page lists Gemini Live in the free tier, at $0 a month with a Google Account, and the paid Google AI plans start at $4.99 a month.
