How to delete Gemini history, and what Google still keeps

How to delete Gemini history: open gemini.google.com, click Settings & help, then Activity, and choose Delete, then All time. To remove one chat, hover over it in the side panel, click More, then Delete. As of October 2026, that takes the chat out of view at once, but Google's full deletion takes around two months, encrypted backups can hold data for up to six months, and any chat a human reviewer already saw stays for up to three years.
We read Google's own pages on October 22, 2026: the Gemini help articles on managing activity and recent chats (in their Computer, Android, and iPhone versions), sharing, Gems, uploads, Connected Apps, and memory; the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub (its Privacy questions section was last updated October 19, 2026); the Google Workspace generative AI privacy hub; and Google's data retention policy. Every step below is Google's own wording for the button you press. To Google's credit, it documents nearly every leftover itself, on pages that in one case disagree with each other.
Every way to delete Gemini history, and what stays
| What you want gone | Web (gemini.google.com) | Gemini app (Android, iPhone) | What Google's pages say is left |
|---|---|---|---|
| One chat | Side panel, hover the chat, More, then Delete | Menu, then under "Recent" touch and hold the chat, then Delete | A reviewed copy, up to 3 years; its public link, depending on which Google page you read |
| One day | Settings & help, Activity, then the delete icon next to the day | Menu, your profile picture, Gemini Apps Activity, then the same icon | The same |
| Last hour or last day | Activity, Delete, then Last hour or Last day | Same, from Gemini Apps Activity | The same |
| A custom range | Activity, Delete, then Custom range | Same | The same |
| Everything | Activity, Delete, then All time | Same | Reviewed chats, usage counts kept until you delete your Google Account, and data in other Google services |
| Future chats | Activity, click On, then Turn off or Turn off and delete activity | Same, near the top of Gemini Apps Activity | A 72-hour copy of each new chat |
| Old chats, on a timer | Activity, Deleting activity older than … months, then 3, 18, or 36 months | Same | Nothing extra; auto-deletion follows the same process as manual |

How do you delete a single Gemini chat?
From the side panel. On a computer, open the side panel (click Menu if it's hidden), hover over the chat, click More, then Delete. In the Gemini app on Android or iPhone, tap Menu, touch and hold the chat under "Recent," and tap Delete. In a phone browser, tap the chat, then More and Delete at the top (Google).
Google says a chat deleted this way "is also deleted from Gemini Apps Activity," along with "any content created in that chat (like Canvas docs and apps)." Two catches from the same page:
- Branches are separate. "Deleting a branched chat doesn't delete the original chat. Deleting the original chat doesn't delete a branched chat." Delete each one.
- The side panel needs Keep Activity. On a personal account, pinning, renaming, and deleting from the side panel "are only available if you have Keep Activity turned on." With it off, go to Gemini Apps Activity instead.
How do you delete all your Gemini history at once?
In Gemini Apps Activity. On the web, click Settings & help, then Activity. In the app, tap Menu, your profile picture or initial, then Gemini Apps Activity. Above your activity, choose Delete, then All time (Google). The same Delete menu offers Last hour, Last day, and Custom range, and each day in the list has its own delete icon.
Deleting activity for a Gemini Live chat also deletes its audio, transcript, videos, and screenshares, Google says. Chats you imported from another AI app are in the same activity, and the Privacy Hub says you can delete them one at a time or "bulk delete all imported chats" that came from one .zip file (Privacy Hub).
How do you turn off Gemini Keep Activity?
Open Settings & help, then Activity, click On near the top, and choose Turn off, or Turn off and delete activity to clear the past at the same time (Google). It's on by default for anyone 18 or over.
Turning it off changes two things about deleting. Gems stay in your account even though chats with them stop being saved: "Any Gems you create will still be saved to your account. Any chats you create with Gems will not be saved." And the side panel's delete button stops working, so later deletes go through Gemini Apps Activity. What happens to chats while it's off, including the 72-hour copy and the feedback exception to training, is covered in is Gemini private.
How do you make Gemini auto-delete your history?
Set a shorter timer. In Activity, click Deleting activity older than … months (or Choose an auto-delete option), pick a period or Don't auto-delete activity, then click Next and follow the prompts (Google). Google says a timed deletion runs the same removal process as a manual one.
Does deleting Gemini history delete it permanently?
Eventually, for most of it. When you delete, Google says it "immediately" starts removing the data, first from view, then from storage (Google). Its retention policy puts numbers on that: the process "generally takes around 2 months from the time of deletion," often including "up to a month-long recovery period," and data "can remain" in encrypted backups "for up to 6 months" (Google retention policy).
Deleting doesn't reach chats a human reviewer already saw, which Google keeps for up to three years apart from your account, or data saved by other Google services you used with Gemini (Privacy Hub). We go through those copies in is Gemini private.
Google's account help adds that it may retain some data after a deletion for security and fraud prevention, financial records, or a legal requirement such as "a lawful subpoena" (Google Account Help). Our guide on whether AI chats can be subpoenaed covers how that has played out. This isn't legal advice.
What does deleting a chat leave in Gems, links, uploads, and connected apps?
Several of them, and most need a delete step of their own.
- Public links. Google's two pages disagree. The activity page says "If a shared chat is deleted, it doesn't delete the related public link" (Google). The sharing page says that if any part of a shared chat is deleted, "the public link is also deleted" (Google). Don't rely on either: go to Settings & help, Your public links, and click Delete public link, or Delete all links. People who continued your shared chat keep their copy, and posts where you pasted the link stay up.
- Gems. Deleting a chat with a Gem "doesn't delete the Gem." Open the side panel, click Gems, find it under "My Gems," then Options and Delete (Google). Gems from Google Labs run on Opal, sit in an "Opal" folder in your Google Drive, and aren't in your Gemini activity at all.
- Uploads. Files and photos you add are saved in your activity with the chat, so deleting the chat's activity is how you remove them. Google says freeing the storage they use "may take several minutes" (Google). Source files added to a Gemini Notebook are saved in the notebook instead.
- Instructions. Your instructions for Gemini stay "until you choose to delete it." Find them under Settings & help, Personal Intelligence, Instructions for Gemini (Google).
- Memory. After you delete a chat, "there might be a short delay" before Gemini stops using it to personalize replies (Google).
Can you delete Gemini history on a work or school account?
Not yourself. Google says users with a work or school account "cannot delete chats or create public links for chats" (Google), and that "only a Workspace administrator can delete Gemini Apps activity" for those accounts (Google). Your administrator controls retention instead; is Gemini private covers what work accounts get.
What deleting a chat means on Morse
Every leftover above exists because Gemini files your chats on Google's servers, under your Google Account, so pressing delete only asks Google to start its own process. Two months of removal, six months of backups, and three years for reviewed copies all happen on hardware you'll never see.
On Morse, chat history is stored only in your browser, encrypted, and our servers don't keep messages or log their content. Delete a chat or clear your browser and Morse can't recover it, though in Anonymous mode the model's provider may hold a message for a limited time under its own policy. Save anything you'll want later.
- Anonymous, to ask Gemini without building a Google history. Gemini is one of the models you can pick, and our proxy sends your message under Morse's own account with your account, email, and IP address taken off. Google receives the text without knowing it's you, and may hold it for a limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy. Since what you write still reaches Google, keep names and identifying details out of it.
- Private, when the host shouldn't keep anything. New chats start here. Open-weight models like DeepSeek, Kimi, and GLM answer under the zero data retention agreements Morse has with its inference, search, and other providers, and where a provider confirms zero retention on each reply, Morse checks and refuses any reply that doesn't.
- E2EE, for what no one should read. Your browser verifies the enclave's proof that it's genuine and seals the message for that enclave alone, so our servers only ever pass along ciphertext. This depends on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed. E2EE chats come with Pro, $19 a month; see how end-to-end encrypted AI chat works.
We don't train AI on your content, sell your data, or show ads (Morse privacy policy). Signing out locks your history, and a Temporary chat lives in memory only. Since we don't store chats, we usually have very little to give authorities. For other apps that keep history off their servers, read AI that doesn't save your data.

Common questions
Can you recover a deleted Gemini chat?
Not by any step on Google's Gemini help pages, as of October 22, 2026. Google's retention policy mentions a recovery period of up to a month "in case the data was removed unintentionally," but describes no way for you to use it, so export first if you might want a chat back.
Does downloading your Gemini data delete it?
No. Google's download page says exporting your Gemini Apps activity "doesn't delete it from Google's servers." The export runs through takeout.google.com, where you pick "Gemini" for Gems and "Gemini Apps" under My Activity for chats, generated media, and uploads.
Does deleting Gemini history also delete my Google Search history?
No. The Privacy Hub says deleting Gemini Apps activity "does not delete data saved in those other services," and settings like Search Services History or Timeline may keep saving data while you use them. Each has its own page in My Activity.
Why does a deleted Gemini chat still show up?
Check Gemini Apps Activity at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, signed in to the account you chatted with, and delete it there. On a work or school account, Google says only your Workspace administrator can delete Gemini activity.
