How to delete Meta AI chats in every Meta app, and what stays behind

The Morse teamPublished 9 min read

To delete Meta AI chats, you have to go app by app: in the Meta AI app or on meta.ai, use Delete all chats and media; in WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, type /reset-ai in the AI chat before you delete it; and on Ray-Ban or Oakley Meta glasses, clear the Voice activity log. As of November 2026, no single button deletes Meta AI history across every Meta app, and Meta's own AI terms warn that deleting messages, threads, or "even your account may not delete our copy of your personal information" (Meta).

We read Meta's Privacy Center, the Meta, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook help centers, Meta's AI terms and privacy policy, and the glasses' voice privacy notice on November 6, 2026. Every step below links to the page it came from. Meta gets credit for candor here. Its Privacy Center says outright that deleting a WhatsApp chat with Meta AI isn't enough, and it publishes the commands that show, download, and reset what its AIs keep.

Where to delete Meta AI chats in each app

Each row is from Meta's own pages, read November 6, 2026. "Your copy" is the chat you see; "Meta's copy" is the one its AI keeps.

The first row stops at the Meta AI app because Meta keeps the histories apart. Its glasses help page says prompt history from the glasses and the Meta AI app "will not be available in other destinations with Meta AI integrations such as Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp" (Meta), so clearing one app leaves the others untouched.

How do you delete Meta AI messages on WhatsApp?

In three steps, in this order: download, reset, delete. Meta's Privacy Center says "if you delete a chat with AI in the WhatsApp app, the information will only be deleted on WhatsApp. To delete it from Meta, you'll need to use the reset command" (Meta).

  1. Save a copy, if you want one. Type /download-all-ai-info in a chat with Meta AI, and it sends a link to download all your AI conversations. Meta reminds you to do this "before you delete an AI chat or your WhatsApp account" (Meta).
  2. Reset Meta's copy. Type /reset-ai to reset that chat, or /reset-all-ais to reset every AI chat you have on WhatsApp, group chats included (Meta).
  3. Delete your copy. On an iPhone, swipe left on the chat in the Chats tab, then tap More, Delete chat, and Delete chat again. On Android, tap and hold the chat, then tap Delete chat (WhatsApp). WhatsApp says a deleted chat "can't be undone."

Step 2 doesn't clear your screen. Meta says that after a reset "you'll still see your copy of the chat with the AI, but it won't remember the previous messages" (Meta). That's why the reset has to come before the delete: once the chat is gone from your phone, there's nowhere to type the command.

Does /reset-ai still work?

Yes. As of November 6, 2026, Meta's Privacy Center still documents /reset-ai and /reset-all-ais for Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. It says they work "by deleting their copy of your messages and any saved details they might have about you" (Meta). Type them in a one-to-one chat with the AI. /reset-all-ais reaches "all the AIs on that app," so run it once in each app you've used.

The commands don't cross apps, and they don't touch the Meta AI app or meta.ai, which have their own Delete all button. We found no command on Meta's pages that resets every Meta app at once.

How do you delete Meta AI history in the app and on meta.ai?

Use Delete all chats and media, under Settings, Data & privacy, and Manage your information. In the app, open it from Menu at the top left and Settings at the bottom left. On meta.ai in a computer's browser, start from your profile picture at the bottom left. On a phone's browser, tap Menu first, and your history shows as "Recent" rather than History (Meta).

The same help page lists what it skips:

  • Public posts and vibes. "Your public vibes won't be deleted." Remove them with Remove all public vibes on the same screen.
  • Vibes other people made of you. Delete those under Media that includes me.
  • Voice. A voice conversation's recording sits in your history "temporarily," but "your text transcript will remain available in your history" until you delete it.

The Manage your information page offers three things: export your information, remove all public vibes, and delete all chats and media (Meta). Shared links to a chat are handled in the chat itself, as we cover in is Meta AI private and AI chat share links.

How do you delete Meta AI chats on Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook?

Reset first, then delete, as on WhatsApp. Meta's reset page covers Messenger and Instagram by name (Meta).

  • Instagram: type /reset-ai in the AI chat, then tap Messages, tap and hold the chat, and tap Delete twice. Download first if you want a record: Instagram says "your Data Download file doesn't include messages that you've deleted" (Instagram).
  • Messenger: type /reset-ai, then in Chats swipe left on the conversation, tap More, Delete, and Delete to confirm. Messenger says this also deletes "the media in that chat" (Messenger).
  • Facebook: Ask Meta AI, at the top of your Feed or under a post, starts a chat with Meta AI (Facebook). Facebook's help page keeps that chat in your messages: tap Messenger in the Facebook app, then Meta AI at the top right (Facebook). Reset and delete it there, as in Messenger.

To keep a copy of Messenger and Instagram AI chats first, Meta points you to Download your information in Accounts Center (Meta), which WhatsApp's help center says is being renamed Meta Account (WhatsApp).

How do you delete what Meta AI remembers?

With the reset commands, which are the memory controls Meta still documents. Search results on November 6, 2026 still showed steps for a Memory screen in the Meta AI app, from a Meta help page titled "Delete remembered details about you on Meta AI." Opened that day, the page led to the Meta AI help center's front page instead (Meta), which lists no article on memory. If your app still shows a Memory screen, use it as well.

Check what an AI kept before you clear it. Type /saved-details in a Messenger or Instagram chat with it to see "the most recent details from that conversation" (Meta), then /reset-ai, which deletes "any saved details they might have about you" along with Meta's copy of the messages (Meta). To fix a single detail instead of wiping it, Meta says to tell the AI "right there in your chat."

Muse, Meta's AI agent, keeps its own memory, and only Settings, Data Controls, Reset Muse clears all of it at once (Meta).

How do you delete Ray-Ban Meta voice recordings?

In the Meta AI app's Voice activity log: tap Glasses at the top right, then Device settings, your glasses under Glasses, Glasses privacy, and Voice activity log (Meta). There's no switch to stop the recording. Meta's help page says "the option to disable voice recordings storage is no longer available, but you can delete recordings anytime" (Meta).

Recordings you don't delete stay for up to a year, as we cover in are Meta AI glasses private. Check the log now and then. On October 13, 2026, after owners reported glasses saving conversations without "Hey Meta," Meta told Android Authority the issue "has been resolved" and that people can "review and delete voice logs" in settings (Android Authority). The reports came from a few owners, and Android Authority said it hadn't reproduced the behavior.

Does deleting Meta AI chats delete Meta's copy?

Not always, by Meta's own account. The AI terms quoted at the top send you to the Privacy Center for "the correct way" to delete, and on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger that way is the reset command (Meta).

Three things a delete can't undo:

  • Training already done. Meta says deleted data "won't be used for future training," but a model that already learned from it "won't change in that moment" (Meta).
  • Ads already picked. None of the Meta pages we read says whether deleting a chat changes ads it already shaped; we cover how Meta started using AI chats for ads in December 2025 in is Meta AI private.
  • Copies Meta keeps for other reasons. Meta's privacy policy, effective July 23, 2026, says it decides how long to keep information "on a case-by-case basis," and may keep some longer to meet legal obligations or prevent harm (Meta).

How Morse keeps no server copy to delete

Deleting Meta AI chats takes a table because Meta keeps a copy of each conversation on its servers, one per app, tied to your Meta Account, and in WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger your delete button only reaches the copy on your screen. Morse keeps your chat history in your browser instead, encrypted, and Morse's servers don't keep messages or log what you write (privacy policy).

So the steps above shrink to one. Morse keeps no server copy of your chats to reset, so there's no command to remember before you delete. There are no ads for a chat to shape, and Morse doesn't train AI on your content or sell your data. Each chat runs in the privacy mode you pick:

  • Private, so the model's host keeps nothing either. It's where a new chat starts. Open-weight models like DeepSeek, Kimi, and GLM, plus Grok, run here, and Morse has zero data retention agreements with its inference, search, and other providers. Where a provider confirms zero retention on each reply, Morse checks it and refuses a reply that doesn't.
  • E2EE, for a chat you'd want no server to read at all. Your browser checks the enclave's hardware attestation, then encrypts the message so only that enclave can read it, and our servers relay text they can't read. The enclaves are run by third-party providers, not by Morse, and the protection rests on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed. E2EE chats come with Pro, at $19 a month.
  • Anonymous, for GPT, Claude, or Gemini without your account attached. Our proxy removes your account, email, and IP address and sends the message under Morse's own account. The provider sees the message without knowing it's you, and may keep it for a limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy, so pick Private or E2EE for anything you'd want gone everywhere.

Your history is locked when you sign out, and opening it takes two keys: one that never leaves your device, and one our server gives you when you sign in. Clearing your browser or deleting your account deletes your chats, and Morse can't recover them, so keep a copy of anything you need. Because we don't store chats, we usually have very little to give authorities. For a question you don't want kept even on your device, a Temporary chat is held in memory only.

Common questions

Can I get a Meta AI chat back after I delete it?

On WhatsApp, only from a backup made before you deleted it. WhatsApp says a deleted chat "can't be undone" and that it can't recover deleted chats for you. Instagram's Data Download file leaves out messages you've deleted, so download first.

Will deleting my Facebook account delete my Meta AI chats?

Not necessarily. Meta's AI terms say deleting "even your account may not delete our copy," and tell you to read the Privacy Center before you delete or deactivate it. Run /reset-all-ais in WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, and Delete all chats and media in the Meta AI app, before you close the account.

Do people in a group chat still see what I asked Meta AI after I delete it?

Yes. Messenger says deleting a chat removes it only from your inbox, and Instagram says the same of its inbox. /reset-all-ais clears the AI's copy from group chats you're in, but the other members keep theirs.
