How to turn off Meta AI on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger

You can't turn off Meta AI completely: as of October 2026, there's no switch in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, or the Meta AI app that removes it, so learning how to turn off Meta AI means using the separate controls each app gives you. You can block Meta AI features in a WhatsApp chat with Restricted chat, stop Messenger chats being shared with it, archive or mute its chat, delete Meta's copy with /reset-ai, wipe your history in the Meta AI app, and, in the EU or UK, object to Meta training on your data.
We read Meta's and WhatsApp's own help centers and Meta's Privacy Center on October 22, 2026, and every step below links to the page it came from. Meta deserves credit for one thing here. Its WhatsApp pages say plainly that using Meta AI "is always optional," and its help pages give exact menu paths for most of these controls.
Can you turn off Meta AI completely?
No. None of the Meta or WhatsApp help pages we read on October 22, 2026 describe a way to remove Meta AI from an app, and none of them is titled anything like "turn off Meta AI." WhatsApp calls its AI features "optional AI experiences" and lists "Access to Meta AI through WhatsApp search" among them (WhatsApp). Optional here means you don't have to use it. The button and the search entry stay.
Meta's help centers spread the controls you do have across a dozen pages, one per feature.
What can you turn off in each Meta app?
Each row is from Meta's own help pages, read October 22, 2026. "Can't" means no Meta page we read offers a control for it.
| App | What you can turn off or remove | What you can't | The path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta AI features in one chat (Restricted chat); Private Processing features such as summaries and writing help; web search in Incognito chats; the Meta AI chat in your list (archive) | The Meta AI button and search entry | Restricted chat, turned on chat by chat; Settings, Chats, Private Processing (WhatsApp, WhatsApp) | |
| Messenger | Sharing a chat's messages with Meta AI; notifications from the AI chat; the chat itself (archive or delete) | Meta AI in search and the chat list | Chat Information, Privacy & support, Message permissions, Allow message sharing (Meta) |
| A group's AI, if you're the admin | Ask Meta AI in the Feed and search, and under posts | Group admin tools (Meta) | |
| Meta's copy of your AI chats (reset); chats on AI Studio (delete) | Meta AI in chats and search | Type /reset-ai in the chat (Meta) | |
| Meta AI app | Notifications; all chats and media; public vibes | Training on what you send, ads use | Menu, Settings, Data & privacy, Manage your information (Meta) |
| Meta glasses | "Hey Meta" (and with it, the camera feature); stored voice recordings, by deleting them | Voice recording storage | Glasses, Device settings, your glasses, Glasses privacy, Voice activity log (Meta) |
| Every app | Training on your data, in the EU and UK, by objection | Training in the US; ads based on your AI chats | Privacy Rights Request channel (Meta) |
How do you turn off Meta AI on WhatsApp?
Turn on Restricted chat in each chat you want to protect. WhatsApp says that with it on, people in the chat "can't use Meta AI features in this chat," and also can't export the chat, auto-save its media, or use linked devices for it (WhatsApp). As of October 2026, it's replacing Advanced chat privacy on the latest version of WhatsApp.
- Who can turn it on: either person in a one-to-one chat, and only admins in a group.
- Where: your primary phone only, since WhatsApp says it "can only be turned off or on on your primary device."
- Older chats: a chat with Advanced chat privacy already on "will not update to Restricted chat automatically," so open it and switch over.
Then, for your own use of Meta AI:
- Turn off the features you don't want. WhatsApp says you can "opt-out of those specific features in Settings," naming writing help and message summaries (WhatsApp).
- Turn off web search. Go to Settings, Chats, Private Processing, and switch off Web search (WhatsApp).
- Hide the Meta AI chat. In the Chats tab, tap and hold it, then tap the archive icon at the top. Archived chats stay archived when new messages arrive, and you won't get notifications from them unless you're mentioned or replied to (WhatsApp).
- Delete Meta's copy. Type /reset-ai in the chat before you delete it; we explain why in is Meta AI private.
None of these remove the Meta AI button. Restricted chat also doesn't change what Meta can read: WhatsApp says Meta AI "can only access the messages people choose to send it," whether it's on or off (WhatsApp). It stops someone else in the chat from choosing to send yours. We cover what Meta does with your AI chats in is Meta AI private.
How do you turn off Meta AI on Instagram?
You can't, and Instagram's help center has no page on muting or hiding it. Meta does document how to clear what it holds:
- /reset-ai in a chat with an AI deletes Meta's copy of that chat, and /reset-all-ais does it for every AI chat on Instagram (Meta); is Meta AI private has the details.
- Chats on AI Studio: if you permanently delete a chat with an AI at aistudio.instagram.com, "your previous messages will no longer be available" when you start a new one (Instagram).
How do you remove Meta AI from Facebook and Messenger?
You can't remove it from Facebook. Meta's help page on asking Meta AI puts it behind an icon at the top right of your Feed and under some posts, and says you "may see a summary or response from Meta AI while searching" (Meta). No setting turns that off. If you run a Facebook group, its group AI is "enabled by default" where it's available, and admins can disable it (Meta).
Messenger gives you more:
- Stop a chat being shared with Meta AI. Open the chat, click Information, then under Privacy & support click Message permissions, and turn off Allow message sharing (Meta). Meta says that when someone uses an AI feature, up to 50 recent messages are shared with Meta AI, and mentioning @Meta AI in a group shares the past 30 days (Meta). In a group, only admins can change the setting, and people can still forward a message to Meta AI themselves.
- Mute the Meta AI chat. On messenger.com, hover over the chat, click Options, then Mute notifications (Meta).
- Hide or delete it. Archiving hides a chat "until the next time you chat with that person" (Meta), so Meta AI's chat comes back the next time you use it. To delete it, type /reset-ai first, as is Meta AI private explains.
Meta AI also remembers you across apps. Meta says that when your accounts share an Accounts Center, "Meta AI remembers details you share with it in chats across those accounts," and you can correct it in a chat, as in "Remember that I no longer enjoy canoeing" (Meta).
How do you turn off Meta AI in the Meta AI app and on Meta glasses?
In the Meta AI app, you can delete your history, as we walk through in is Meta AI private, and silence it. For notifications, go to Menu, Settings, and Notifications under App settings, where you can pause all of them (Meta).
On Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Meta took a switch away. Its help page says voice conversations with Meta AI "are stored by default" and "The option to disable voice recordings storage is no longer available," though you can still delete recordings in the Meta AI app (Meta). Meta says stored voice interactions can be processed by "trained reviewers" to improve its products, and lists them under Glasses, Device settings, your glasses, Glasses privacy, Voice activity log (Meta). Disabling "Hey Meta" turns off the feature that lets the glasses' camera answer questions about what you see.
How do you stop Meta AI from using your data?
In the US, you can't: Meta trains on your AI chats and uses them for ads with no opt-out, as we cover in is Meta AI private. We compare Meta's training rules with other companies' in which AI companies train on your data.
In the EU and UK, you can object. Meta's help page says GDPR gives you "the right to object at any time" to processing based on Meta's legitimate interests. You submit it through the Privacy Rights Request channel by choosing a product, then "How can I object to the use of my information" (Meta). Name one purpose, such as training AI, since Meta says it can deny an objection like "I object to everything Meta processes about me." Meta's Messenger help page also links a form for objecting to the use of your information for its generative AI models (Meta). We couldn't read that form, because it needs a login.
Wherever you live, three things cut what Meta gets: /reset-ai before you delete a chat, Restricted chat or message permissions in your group chats, and keeping WhatsApp out of the Accounts Center that holds your Facebook and Instagram, since Meta says Meta AI remembers what you tell it "across those accounts" when they share one (Meta). This isn't legal advice.
How Morse gives you AI with nothing to switch off
Meta AI is hard to turn off because you never chose to open it. It's built into the apps you use to talk to people, tied to the Accounts Center identity Meta sells ads against, and every chat lands on Meta's servers until you remember a command. Morse is built the other way round: it's a separate web app you open when you want AI, your chat history lives in your browser, and Morse doesn't train AI on your content, sell your data, or show ads (privacy policy).
None of the controls in the table above has a Morse equivalent to hunt for. Morse sits outside your messages, so a friend can't forward your chat to it, you don't need a reset command, and your questions don't feed an ad profile. Morse has over 30 models, open and closed, and you pick a privacy mode for each chat.
- E2EE, for the chats you'd least want on any server. Pick an open-weight model like GLM, Kimi, or DeepSeek, and your browser checks the secure enclave's hardware attestation, then encrypts the message so only that enclave can read it. Our servers relay text they can't read. The enclaves are run by third-party providers, not by Morse, and the protection rests on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed. E2EE chats come with Pro, $19 a month.
- Private, for everyday questions you'd rather no company keep. It's where a new chat starts. Open-weight models plus Grok run here, and Morse has zero data retention agreements with its inference, search, and other providers. Where a provider confirms zero retention on each reply, Morse checks it and refuses a reply that doesn't.
- Anonymous, to ask GPT, Claude, or Gemini without it being tied to you. Our proxy removes your account, email, and IP address and sends the message under Morse's own account. The provider sees the message without knowing it's you, and may keep it for a limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy, so leave out names you'd rather not send.
Your chat history is stored only in your browser, encrypted, not on Morse's servers, and it's locked when you sign out. Deleting a chat deletes it from your browser, and Morse's servers don't keep messages. In Anonymous mode, the provider may still hold a message for a limited time under its own policy. Clearing your browser or deleting your account deletes your chats, and Morse can't recover them, so save anything you need. Because we don't store chats, we usually have very little to give authorities.
Send a first message from the Morse home page without an account, or start free and move to Pro when you want E2EE.
Common questions
Does blocking the Meta AI account on Instagram or Facebook still work?
Some 2024 guides suggested it, but no Meta help page we read on October 22, 2026 describes blocking Meta AI. Restricted chat on WhatsApp and Allow message sharing on Messenger are the per-chat controls Meta documents.
Will uninstalling the Meta AI app remove Meta AI from my other apps?
No. Meta says prompt history from the Meta AI app and glasses isn't shown in Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp, and each of those apps has Meta AI built in on its own. Delete your history in the app's settings before you uninstall it.
Can my friends send my messages to Meta AI?
On Messenger, yes, unless message sharing is turned off in that chat: Meta says up to 50 recent messages, or 30 days of a group chat, can be shared when someone uses an AI feature. On WhatsApp, Restricted chat stops people in the chat using Meta AI features there.
