How to delete Grok history: chats, files, share links, and your account
The Morse teamPublished 9 min read
To delete Grok history on Grok.com, open Settings and choose the button for deleting all conversations; in the Grok app, go to Settings, then Data Controls, and tap Delete All Conversations. As of October 2026, SpaceXAI says deleted chats leave its systems within 30 days, but that button covers conversations only. Your uploaded files, share links, connected apps, and Grok on X history each have their own page or switch, and a deleted account can be restored for 30 days.
We read SpaceXAI's consumer FAQ, its privacy policy (last updated October 11, 2026), its terms of service (October 12, 2026), its help pages for Grok.com and the apps, and its privacy portal on October 22, 2026, and X's Grok help page from an archived copy the same day. The company that runs Grok calls itself SpaceXAI LLC, shortened to "SpaceXSI" on its own pages, though X's help page still says xAI and the privacy policy's contact line still reads "x.AI LLC" (privacy policy).
Before you delete anything you want to keep, save a copy. The FAQ says to go to Settings and Data Controls "to delete or download your data" (Grok FAQ).
How do I delete one Grok chat?
From your conversation history, one at a time (Grok FAQ):
- In the Grok app: tap your profile picture to open your conversation history, tap and hold the name of the chat, then choose Delete Conversation.
- On Grok.com: open the history page with the icon at the top right (three horizontal lines and a magnifying glass), then select the trash button next to the chat.
How do I delete all my Grok chats at once?
- In the Grok app: go to Settings, then Data Controls, and select Delete All Conversations (Grok FAQ).
- On Grok.com: go to Settings and "select the button next to what you would like to delete," in the FAQ's words. The same screen holds the button for deleting your account, so read the label before you click.
SpaceXAI's FAQ says that "after you indicate that you want your data deleted, it will take up to 30 days to delete from SpaceXSI systems." Its terms say deleted content "will be queued for deletion, which may take up to 30 days, except as required by law" (terms of service). De-identified copies, safety and legal holds, and court orders can keep a chat longer; we go through each exception in is Grok private, and through what courts can demand in can AI chats be subpoenaed.
The same terms cover what you typed before you deleted it. When you submit an input, you grant SpaceXAI "an irrevocable, perpetual, transferable, sublicensable, royalty-free, and worldwide right" to use, copy, store, and modify it, including to improve its products. The terms don't say deleting a chat ends that right. This isn't legal advice.
How do I delete Grok history on X?
Grok inside X keeps a separate history under X's rules, so deleting your Grok.com chats leaves it in place. SpaceXAI's privacy policy says Grok on X "is governed by the X Privacy Policy and X Terms" (privacy policy). To clear it, per X's help page (X Help Center):
- In X's settings, select Privacy & Safety.
- Select Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok.
- Choose Delete Conversation History.
- Confirm Delete your interactions, inputs, and results.
X's page says "you can delete all of your conversation history at once" and describes no way to delete a single Grok chat. Deleted conversations "are removed from our systems within 30 days, unless we have to keep them for security or legal reasons."
If you ever signed in to Grok.com with your X account, SpaceXAI's privacy policy says you may have directed X to share "your Grok on X conversation history" with SpaceXAI. Neither company's page says whether clearing your history on X reaches that copy, so delete on both sides. And if you added @Grok to an X Chat, X says SpaceXAI gets every message sent after Grok joins, "up until the moment Grok is removed" (X Help Center). Removing Grok stops new messages from reaching it. X doesn't say it deletes the ones Grok already received.
Does deleting Grok chats delete your uploaded files and images?
For files, SpaceXAI sends you to a separate page. Its help page says that to "delete files and assets," you go to grok.com/files "to delete content and free up space," and to Profile, then Settings, then Data Controls for "more ways to control your data" (Grok help). The same page gives both one timeline: "Deleted chats and files are removed from systems within standard retention windows unless we are required to retain them longer for legal, compliance, or safety purposes." It doesn't say how long a standard window is.
SpaceXAI's privacy portal lists "generated content" as its own category next to your account and conversation history under Delete your data (privacy portal). None of the pages we read gives a separate path for deleting images and videos made with Grok Imagine. Check grok.com/files and the Data Controls screen for them, and use the portal if you can't find a control.
How do I remove Grok share links?
Revoke them on their own page. Sign in to Grok.com, go to grok.com/share-links, and click Remove next to each link you no longer want live (Grok FAQ). The FAQ warns that a link posted publicly "may be subject to indexing by a search engine (e.g., Google)."
The FAQ doesn't say that deleting a chat kills its share link. Remove the link first, then delete the chat. For what public Grok links have exposed before, see is Grok private.
How do I make Grok forget what it remembers?
SpaceXAI's help pages don't say. Grok's own account announced in April 2025 that "Grok now remembers your conversations" (Grok on X), but on October 22, 2026, neither the consumer FAQ nor the Grok.com help page explains how to view, delete, or turn off memories, or whether deleting a chat removes what Grok learned from it. Look in Settings, then Data Controls, for a memory switch, and delete the chats you don't want Grok to draw on. Private Chat (below) is the one way SpaceXAI documents to keep a conversation out of your history from the start.
How do I disconnect Gmail, Google Drive, and other connectors?
Go to grok.com/connectors, find the service in your connected list, and click Disconnect (Grok help). For Google, you can also revoke access from your Google account's permissions page. SpaceXAI says disconnecting will "immediately revoke Grok's access," that it doesn't train on your Google Drive data, and that the connector doesn't store your files: Grok "accesses your data in real time when you ask a question, and does not retain it afterward." The answers Grok wrote about those files are part of the chat, though, so delete the chat too.
How do I delete my Grok account?
- In the Grok app: go to Settings, then Data Controls, and select Delete Account (Grok FAQ).
- On Grok.com: go to Settings and select the account button.
- From any browser: follow the steps at accounts.x.ai/account (Grok help).
SpaceXAI's help page adds two things the FAQ leaves out. If the same login gives you API access, "your API access will be removed as well." And "you can restore your account within 30 days by logging in again and confirming restoration." If you meant to delete it, don't confirm a restore. The privacy policy says a deleted account's data is deleted "within 30 days unless it is necessary to retain the data for legal, compliance, or safety purposes" (privacy policy).
Cancel any subscription where you bought it before you delete. SpaceXAI's help page says Apple handles App Store subscriptions and X handles X Premium refunds, and none of the pages we read says deleting the account cancels either.
Can you recover deleted Grok chats?
Not from any feature SpaceXAI documents. Several guides in the top results for this search describe a "Recently Deleted" list that restores chats for 30 days, but none of SpaceXAI's pages we read on October 22, 2026 mentions one. The 30 days on SpaceXAI's own pages is the time it takes to remove a deleted chat from its systems, and those pages describe no way to bring one back. The account restore above is the one undo SpaceXAI describes. Download your data first if there's a chance you'll want it.

Private Chat: the Grok chat you don't have to delete
A Private Chat, started with the ghost icon, stays out of your history and leaves SpaceXAI's systems on the same 30-day clock without any of the steps above (Grok FAQ); we cover what it does and doesn't protect in is Grok private.
How to delete an AI chat for good
Every delete above is a request to a company that holds the copy. You press the button, and SpaceXAI or X decides when the copy goes, what it keeps for legal or safety reasons, and which of its other pages (files, links, connectors, X) you still have to visit. Morse is built so the copy isn't on our servers to begin with. Your chat history is stored in your browser, encrypted, and Morse's servers don't keep messages or log their content (Morse privacy policy).
If you still want Grok, Morse offers it in Private mode, the mode a new chat starts in: our proxy sends your message under Morse's own account, and Morse has zero data retention agreements with its inference, search, and other providers, so they keep nothing. Grok 4.7 comes with Pro, $19 a month.
On Morse, there's no server copy to chase, because Morse's servers don't keep messages. Clearing your browser or deleting your account removes your history, and Morse can't recover it, so save anything you need first. For how each Morse mode handles Grok and the other models, see is Grok private.
Try a first chat from the Morse home page with no account, or sign up free and keep your history on your own device.
Common questions
Can I delete several Grok chats at once without deleting all of them?
SpaceXAI's FAQ describes two ways only: one conversation at a time from your history, or every conversation at once from Settings. It doesn't describe selecting a handful.
Does Grok delete old chats on its own?
No. SpaceXAI's FAQ says you "can keep your data on your SpaceXSI account for as long as you wish," and none of its pages we read sets an automatic deletion period for a signed-in account.
Does deleting my Grok account delete my X account?
No. SpaceXAI says it is "a separate company from X Corp.," and its FAQ sends you to the X Help Center to delete an X account or its Grok data.
How do I get my Grok data deleted if I can't sign in?
Use SpaceXAI's privacy portal at x.ai/privacy-portal, which says to submit a privacy request if you can't access your account. The privacy policy asks for your full legal name, email address, and your city, state or province, and country.
