How to delete your Character.AI account, and what it keeps afterward
The Morse teamPublished 7 min read
To delete your Character AI account on the website, open your Profile, click Profile Settings, then Account, then Manage Account & Data, and choose Delete Account. In the app it's under your Profile, the settings icon, and Remove Account. Character.AI says deletion "is permanent and cannot be reversed," but its own privacy policy lets it keep some information afterward, and public characters you made can stay live for other people.
On October 22, 2026, we read Character.AI's help center, privacy policy, regional privacy disclosures, terms of service, its October 12 bankruptcy post, the court case page, and the 40 states' filing in the case. Where Character.AI doesn't say something, such as how long a deletion takes, we say that too.
How do I delete my Character.AI account?
These are the steps in Character.AI's help center (C.AI Help Center).
On the website, on a computer or a phone's browser:
- Go to your Profile.
- Click Profile Settings.
- Click Account.
- Click Manage Account & Data.
- Click Delete Account.
In the iPhone or Android app:
- Open your Profile.
- Tap the settings icon.
- Tap Remove Account.
The help article was last edited on October 3, 2024, so if a menu has moved, the Manage Account & Data screen on the website is the place to look.
What should you do before you delete it?
Cancel c.ai+, save what you want to keep, and only then delete, because a deleted account can't be reopened to fix either one.
- Cancel c.ai+ where you bought it. Character.AI's terms say it charges a subscription "on each agreed-upon periodic renewal until you cancel," and that payments are "non-refundable, except where required by law" (Character.AI). None of Character.AI's pages we read says deleting the account cancels the plan.
- Bought on the website: go to Settings, then Account, then Manage, and enter your email. Character.AI emails you a link to its customer portal, where you cancel (C.AI Help Center).
- Bought on an iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose Character.AI, and tap Cancel Subscription (Apple).
- Bought on Android: open your subscriptions in Google Play, choose Character.AI, and tap Cancel subscription (Google Play).
- Save your chats and characters. Character.AI's own export can take 3 to 4 weeks, and its download link lasts 7 days (C.AI Help Center). The help center doesn't say whether an export you asked for still arrives after the account is gone, so wait for the email and download the file before you delete. Morse's exporter runs in your browser, talks only to Character.AI, and saves your characters, chats, and personas to your device.
- Delete the account, with the steps above.
Does deleting your Character.AI account delete your chats?
Mostly, with exceptions Character.AI writes into its own documents. Several of the top Google results we checked on October 22 say deletion permanently removes your chats, bots, and characters. Character.AI's privacy policy and terms describe what can outlast the account, and its pages leave two questions open.
| What | After you delete the account | Character.AI's own source |
|---|---|---|
| Your account | Gone. Deletion "is permanent and cannot be reversed" | Help center |
| Your chats and other information | Deleted, except what it keeps "to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements" | Privacy policy, section 7 |
| Characters you made public | May stay "active on the Services," with their characteristics, "even if you otherwise delete your data and your account" | Privacy policy, section 7 |
| Rights to what you posted and generated | The license you gave is "perpetual, irrevocable," and ending your account "will not terminate Character.AI's rights to your Content" | Terms of service |
| Chats already used to train its models | Nothing published on removing them. Its training opt-out covers "new content" only | Help center |
| Your age-verification selfie or ID | Deleted by Persona within 7 days, whatever you do | Help center |
| How long deletion takes | Not published anywhere we read | Help center, privacy policy |
The privacy policy is the version effective July 1, 2026, and the terms were last updated August 27, 2025. The training opt-out in that row is the one Character.AI describes for users in the European Economic Area and the UK. It's labeled Improve the Model for Everyone, under Manage Account & Data, then Model Improvement, on the website.
What happens to characters you made public?
They can stay. Character.AI says it reserves the right to keep a character that "has been made available to other users" running after you delete your account, "to avoid impacting the experience of other users" (Character.AI). Characters you kept private aren't covered by that clause. Its advice is to leave personal information out of any character you plan to share. If you put details about yourself in a public character's definition or greeting, edit them out or delete the character itself before you delete the account.
Can you delete single Character.AI chats?
Character.AI's help center doesn't explain how, as of October 22, 2026. We searched it for chat deletion and found no article. Its monthly updates describe three tools that change what you see:
- Rewind to Here goes back to a point in a conversation and removes the messages after it, so you can restart from there (February 2025 update).
- Hide takes a restricted character out of your recent chats when you long-press it (August 2025 update).
- Archive, on mobile, hides characters you made from your profile, and you can undo it in Settings (same update).
None of them is described as erasing anything from Character.AI's servers, and two of them only hide things. In December 2025 Character.AI raised the chat history it keeps per character from 100 chats to 1,000, so older chats you'd forgotten may still be there (December 2025 update).
Can you ask Character.AI to delete your data without closing the account?
Yes, depending on where you live. Character.AI's privacy policy lists a right "to request that we delete certain personal information we hold about you," along with access, correction, and a copy in a portable format (Character.AI). You ask through its support request form or by email to privacy@character.ai, and it checks your identity before acting.
The same exceptions apply: "certain information may be exempt," for example what it keeps "for legal compliance and to secure our Services." Its regional disclosures add that if it denies a request where local law gives you the right to appeal, it tells you how (Character.AI).
Does deleting your account now keep your chats out of the sale?
Not by itself. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026, "to facilitate a court-supervised sale of the company" (Character.AI), and no court order we read keeps deleted accounts' data out of that sale. A deletion today does what the table above says, removing the account while the policy's exceptions still apply. On October 14, 2026, 40 attorneys general asked the bankruptcy court that any sale give "all consumers the opportunity to delete their data prior to any sale of that data," a request in a notice rather than a court order (states' notice, Doc. 33).
How Morse makes deleting mean it's gone
Every caveat above exists because your chats sit on Character.AI's servers, under a policy that lets it keep some of them and terms that give it a license to them that outlives your account. Morse is built not to hold your chats at all.
Your chat history, the characters you make, and your personas live in your browser, encrypted. Morse's servers keep no messages and log no message content. What your account does hold is your sign-in details, plan, balance, and a usage ledger with no content in it. Clearing your browser or deleting your Morse account deletes your chats, and Morse can't recover them, so keep your export file too. There's no training opt-out to hunt for. Morse doesn't train AI on your content, sell your data, or show ads.
Moving takes one file. Morse's import page brings your Character.AI characters, chats, and personas into Morse, free on every plan. Its exporter is a bookmark that runs only in your browser, talks only to Character.AI, and saves the file to your device. It's open source under the MIT license (GitHub). On the Free plan, character messages are unlimited, with the model picked for you.
In Chat, each conversation also runs in a privacy mode you pick. Private, the default, is covered by Morse's zero data retention agreements with its inference, search, and other providers, so they keep nothing. In E2EE, on Pro at $19 a month, only a secure enclave your browser has verified can read the message, a guarantee that rests on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed. Anonymous sends your message to GPT, Claude, or Gemini without the provider knowing it's you, though the provider may keep it for a limited time to check for abuse.
If you're still choosing where to go, we compared the Character.AI alternatives on what each does with your chats. Our privacy policy has the details, and are AI chats private compares how the big chat apps keep and delete your conversations.
Save your characters with the exporter before you delete, then start free and pick up where you left off.
Common questions
Does uninstalling the Character.AI app delete my account?
No. Removing the app from your phone leaves the account, and Google Play says uninstalling an app doesn't cancel its subscription either. Use Remove Account inside the app, or Delete Account on the website.
Can I move my chats to a new Character.AI account instead?
No. Character.AI's help center says data, characters, and chat histories can't be transferred between accounts, and it can't change the email address on an account.
Can someone else delete my Character.AI account for me?
Where local privacy law gives you deletion rights, yes, through an authorized agent. Character.AI's regional privacy disclosures say the agent needs your signed, written permission or a power of attorney, and Character.AI may contact you to verify your identity first.
