Claude alternatives: what to switch to, by the reason you're leaving

The Morse teamPublished Facts checked 8 min read

The best Claude alternatives in October 2026 are ChatGPT, Gemini, Mistral's Vibe (the app formerly called Le Chat), Perplexity, DeepSeek, and Morse, and the right one depends on why you're leaving Claude: usage limits that run out mid-task, a phone number at sign-up, a training setting you have to find, refusals, or the price of more usage. Two of them, Perplexity and Morse, still let you use Claude models, and on Morse you can do it without an Anthropic account at all.

We read Anthropic's pricing page, help center, privacy center, and Usage Policy on October 22, 2026, then each alternative's own pricing, help, and privacy pages the same day. We couldn't load Reddit's threads with our tools, so for what users say we quote two public issues filed on Anthropic's own GitHub repository instead. Anthropic, to its credit, publishes more exact retention periods than most AI companies, and its usage pages say plainly that limits can change.

Why do people look for a Claude alternative?

Usually for one of five reasons: limits, the phone number, training, refusals, and price. Each one below is checked against Anthropic's own page.

Usage limits

Claude's paid plans run on two clocks. Anthropic's Pro help page says your "session-based usage limit will reset every five hours," that Pro also has "a weekly usage limit that applies across all models," and that the weekly limit resets "at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account" (Anthropic). How many messages that buys varies with message length, attached files, conversation length, and the model you pick. The same page says Anthropic "may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion."

The pricing page says Pro gives "at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free" and Max gives "5x or 20x more usage than Pro" (Anthropic), but no page we read puts a number of messages on any of those multiples.

Some users say the weekly cap runs out fast. An issue on Anthropic's Claude Code repository, opened October 12, 2025, titled "Weekly Usage Limits Making Claude Subscriptions Unusable," says weekly limits were "being depleted in 1-2 days of normal use"; Anthropic closed and locked it on December 1, 2025 (GitHub). That's a user report, and we didn't measure it.

A phone number at sign-up

Anthropic requires phone verification for every new user with no way to skip it, and an open GitHub issue from March 14, 2026, with hundreds of replies, shows people stuck on the error "Unable to send verification code to this number" (GitHub); we quote Anthropic's rule in is Claude private.

The training setting and how long chats are kept

Claude's consumer plans train on your chats while the "Help Improve our AI models" setting is on, and keep them far longer when it is. Is Claude private walks through the setting and every retention period Anthropic publishes.

Refusals

Claude answers under Anthropic's Usage Policy. The version dated November 12, 2026, already posted, lists 15 universal standards, among them "Do Not Generate Sexually Explicit Content," and says that if Anthropic suspects a violation, "we may warn you or throttle, limit, suspend, or terminate your access" (Anthropic). The policy permits "clearly disclosed parody, satire, or fiction" in its section on impersonation and disinformation, while its other standards apply to fiction too.

Price

As of October 22, 2026, Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed as $200 a year, and Max starts at $100 a month (Anthropic). Max's help page lists two tiers, $100 and $200 a month, for "5x or 20x the Pro plan's usage allowance" (Anthropic).

1. Morse: Claude without an Anthropic account

Every reason above comes back to the account: Claude's meters, its sign-up check, and its plan prices all hang on an Anthropic login. Morse is a web app with over 30 models, open and closed, Claude among them, and you reach Claude through Morse's account instead of your own.

Pick Claude in Anonymous mode and Morse's proxy sends your message under Morse's own account, without your account, email, or IP address. Claude Haiku 5.5 comes with Free, within 15 messages a day, and Claude Sonnet 5.5 comes with Pro, where the Pro text models are unlimited for $19 a month, a dollar under Claude Pro. Anthropic still sees the message, without knowing it's you, and may keep it for a limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy. To use other models, start a chat with DeepSeek, Kimi, or GLM in Private mode, or one in E2EE on Pro, where only a verified enclave can read the message, as long as its hardware and attestation work as designed. Is Claude private covers the modes in more depth.

Sign-up is a code sent to your email, or Google, so there's no phone number to verify, and you can send a first message from the home page before making an account. For requests Claude turns down, paid plans add unfiltered models for dark fiction and straight medical and legal answers. (This page isn't medical or legal advice.) Max, $49 a month, adds higher rate limits and 5,500 credits. Morse doesn't train AI on your chats or show ads (privacy policy), and your history stays encrypted in your browser, so keep a copy of anything you need: clearing the browser deletes it for good.

2. ChatGPT

ChatGPT has a cheaper entry plan than Claude. OpenAI sells Go for $8 a month and says Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise "will not include ads," while it tests ads on Free and Go in the US (OpenAI); Plus is $20 a month (OpenAI). OpenAI says ChatGPT "improves by further training on the conversations people have with it, unless you opt out," and that Temporary Chats aren't used for training (OpenAI). Choose ChatGPT if you want OpenAI's models from $8 a month and you're fine opting out of training yourself.

3. Gemini

Gemini is the cheapest paid step: Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and Google AI Pro $19.99 (Google). Google's Gemini privacy hub says "a subset of chats are reviewed by human reviewers," that reviewed chats "are retained for up to three years," and that saved activity is kept 18 months by default; with Keep Activity off, chats are still kept with your account for 72 hours (Google, updated October 19, 2026). Choose Gemini if you live in Google's apps. Our is Gemini private page covers the settings.

4. Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)

Mistral renamed Le Chat to Vibe, and says "Your account, plan, conversations, and saved content all move with you" (Mistral, August 12, 2026). Pro is $14.99 a month (Mistral). For Vibe, Mistral says "Input and output data are used by default to train our artificial intelligence models," unless you opt out; Enterprise customers are opted out by default (Mistral). Choose Vibe if you want Mistral's own models and will turn training off.

5. Perplexity

Perplexity sells itself on research, and its Pro page lists Claude Sonnet 5.5 next to GPT-6.1 Sol and Gemini 3.8 Flash. Pro is $17 a month billed yearly, and Max $167 (Perplexity). Perplexity says its "agreements with third-party model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic prohibit using Perplexity data for training their models" (Perplexity, last modified September 14, 2026). Your chats still sit in a Perplexity account; is Perplexity private covers its own policy. Choose Perplexity if you want Claude inside a search tool.

6. DeepSeek

DeepSeek's newest model, per its home page, is DeepSeek V4.1 (DeepSeek). Its privacy policy says "we directly collect, process and store your Personal Data in People's Republic of China" (DeepSeek, updated February 10, 2026), and its terms let it use de-identified inputs and outputs to improve the service unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone," under the laws of mainland China (DeepSeek, updated March 27, 2026). Choose DeepSeek's own app if you want its models directly and are comfortable with those terms; on Morse, DeepSeek runs in Private mode, and Morse has zero data retention agreements with its inference, search, and other providers. More in is DeepSeek safe.

How we compared them

We read every page linked above on October 22, 2026 and took each company at its written word. We didn't measure anyone's usage limits or test refusals, and the GitHub issues are users' reports. ChatGPT's own pricing page wouldn't load for us, so ChatGPT's prices come from OpenAI's help center and announcement.

Choose Claude itself if you want Claude Code and Anthropic's own apps under one account. Choose Morse if you want to keep Claude without the phone number or the training toggle, with Claude Sonnet 5.5 unlimited on Pro and your chat history stored encrypted in your own browser.

Start free with Claude Haiku 5.5, or send a first message from the Morse home page without an account.

Morse publishes this comparison. We've tried to keep it fair; if something's wrong or out of date, email hello@trymorse.ai.

Common questions

Is there a free Claude alternative that still uses Claude?

Yes. As of October 22, 2026, Morse's Free plan includes Claude Haiku 5.5 within 15 messages a day, sent in Anonymous mode without an Anthropic account. Perplexity lists Claude Sonnet 5.5 among the models in its paid plans.

Do Claude Team and Enterprise have the same usage limits as Pro?

No. As of October 22, 2026, Anthropic's pricing page sells Team standard seats at $25 a month ($20 billed yearly) with "more usage than Pro", and premium seats at $125 with five times a standard seat's usage.

Can I take my Claude chats with me when I switch?

You can download them. As of October 22, 2026, Anthropic's help center says to open Settings, then Privacy, and choose Export data on the web or desktop app (not the iOS or Android app); a download link arrives by email and expires after 24 hours. Anthropic says the export can't be imported into another personal Claude account.
