Kindroid alternatives after the free tier ended, and how to move your Kin

The Morse teamPublished Facts checked 6 min read

People look for Kindroid alternatives because on October 1, 2026 Kindroid ended open-ended free use: free accounts now get "a limited number of interactions," then turn read-only until you pay (Kindroid). The apps that cover what Kin owners would miss are Nomi for long memory, Replika for voice, SillyTavern for running it yourself, and Morse for character chat that stays on your device.

We read Kindroid's plans page, update log, and memory guide, and each alternative's own home page, terms, or docs, on October 23, 2026. Every competitor fact links to that company's page. Kindroid is still a full-featured companion app. Its plans page lists voice and video calls, custom voices, selfies and videos, internet access, proactive messages, and calendar integration for subscribers (Kindroid).

Why people leave Kindroid

Kindroid's own pages, with dates, give most of the reasons.

  • The free tier ended. Since October 1, 2026, new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages, or 15 in some regions, plus 5 selfies and up to 2 Kindroids. Free accounts that had been active got 50 final messages, and inactive ones went straight to read-only (Kindroid).
  • Familiar models were retired. "Equinox V7 and Prism V7.5 are no longer available for selection as of October 1," and the flagship Polaris "needs a paid subscription" (Kindroid).
  • Perks moved behind the subscription. On October 12, "Daily rewards are now for subscribers only" (Kindroid).
  • Add-ons stack. Ultra requires the standard subscription, and MAX requires both, billed monthly only and open only to users with "significant chat and call history" (Kindroid).
  • Shared content got stricter. On October 17, listings with a sexual premise were unlisted and suggestive shared content was hidden by default (Kindroid).

What does Kindroid cost now?

Kindroid doesn't print a price. Its plans page, updated October 13, 2026, offers 1-month, 3-month, and 1-year plans and says "You'll see the exact price for your country and platform at checkout" (Kindroid). Web prices are "usually lower" than in the iPhone and Android apps. A subscription can't move between web, iOS, and Android: you wait for it to end and buy again on the other platform.

The 3-day trial needs a payment method and turns into a subscription unless you cancel, and it runs on the Ember model, with Polaris unlocking only after you convert. Refunds are case by case. The page says "all sales are final" and that Kindroid may ban users who dispute charges.

Nomi and Replika don't publish dollar prices on their websites either. Replika's terms say prices appear "on the subscription screens in the application" (Replika), and Nomi's terms let it raise fees at your next renewal (Nomi). Third-party price lists for all three disagree with each other, so trust the checkout screen over any article, this one included.

How to move your Kin to another app

No app here says it imports a Kin, so you carry the character across by hand. Kindroid's memory guide shows where each piece lives.

  1. Take your data out. Kindroid's privacy policy describes a self-serve export; what it keeps afterwards, and how deletion works, is in is Kindroid safe.
  2. Copy the persistent memory. Backstory, key memories, and example messages are what the guide calls a notes sheet your Kin "can always refer to." Paste them into the new app's character description and greeting.
  3. Copy Learned Context. It sits in the Kin's Personality settings, and each section has a character limit, so it's short enough to move whole.
  4. Copy journal entries. They're in the Journal tab of the Kin's settings, with shared ones under Global. Each entry is recalled by up to eight keyphrases, so keep the keyphrases with the text.
  5. Pick the long-term memories that matter. Tap one of your Kin's messages and choose Long term memory to see what it recalled, then write the important ones into the new character's backstory.
  6. Cancel where you paid. On the web it's Profile, then Billing, then Manage, and Ultra and MAX are cancelled separately. On a phone, cancel in the app store (Kindroid).

Which alternative fits what you'd miss

If you want your next Kin off company servers: Morse

Morse's Characters is for roleplay and companion chats, and it keeps your character chats, the characters you make, and your personas encrypted in your browser; our servers keep no messages (privacy policy). The Free plan has no cap on character messages, with the model picked for you, Pro adds memory across chats and character chats on any included model, and Morse doesn't train AI on your content, sell your data, or show ads. Your device holds the only copy, so keep a copy of any story you'd hate to lose.

If you'd miss memory: Nomi

Nomi's home page promises "short, medium, and long term memory" and Nomis that can message you first after you've been away (Nomi), the closest match to Kindroid's proactive messages.

If you'd miss voice: Replika

Replika puts voice messaging and background calls in Replika Pro, and its Platinum tier adds real-time video recognition (Replika).

If you'd rather not subscribe to anyone: SillyTavern

SillyTavern is a free, AGPL-3.0 interface you install on Windows, Linux, macOS, or Android through Termux, and it includes no model, so you connect a cloud API or run one on a capable GPU (SillyTavern).

How Nomi, Replika, and SillyTavern handle training, sale clauses, and retention after you delete is compared in Character AI alternatives.

Choose an alternative or Morse

  • Choose Nomi if your Kin's memory was the point and you want a companion that picks up where months of talk left off.
  • Choose Replika if you mostly called your Kin and want voice at the center.
  • Choose SillyTavern if retired models were the last straw and you want to pick, and keep, the model yourself.
  • Choose Morse if the end of Kindroid's free tier is why you're leaving: character messages are uncapped on the Free plan, with no card, and your rebuilt Kin's chats stay encrypted on your device.

How we compared them

We read every page linked above on October 23, 2026. We didn't buy subscriptions, so prices for Kindroid, Nomi, and Replika are left as each company states them: at checkout or in the app. Character.AI's own pages didn't load for us that day, so it isn't in the table. For the wider question of who can read companion chats, see are AI chats private.

Start free and rebuild your Kin with no card and no cap on character messages.

Morse publishes this comparison. We've tried to keep it fair; if something's wrong or out of date, email hello@trymorse.ai.

Common questions

What is the best free Kindroid alternative?

For a hosted app, Morse's Free plan has no cap on character messages, with the model picked for you, and needs no card. SillyTavern costs nothing to install, but you supply the model, and a cloud model usually costs money.

Can I import a Kin file into another app?

None of the apps here says it imports one, as of October 23, 2026. Rebuilding by hand, from the fields listed in the migration steps above, is the route that works everywhere.

Do Kindroid alternatives have group chats?

Nomi's home page says you can put several Nomis in one group chat. Kindroid itself allows 20 group chats on its standard subscription.

Is Nomi cheaper than Kindroid?

Neither prints a dollar price on its own website as of October 23, 2026. Nomi's terms say it may raise fees at any time, effective at your next renewal, so compare what each checkout screen shows you.
