Is Snapchat My AI private? What Snap keeps, shows advertisers, and deletes

The Morse teamPublished 8 min read

As of October 2026, Snapchat My AI is not private from Snap, which keeps everything you send to My AI and everything it sends back until you delete it. Snap uses those chats, plus your location if you share it with Snapchat, to personalize your experience "including ads." When a question looks commercial, Snap's advertising partners receive it along with your age range and IP address.

We read Snap's My AI support articles, its privacy page for My AI, its ads transparency page, its privacy policy (effective September 21, 2026), and the FTC's file on Snap on October 23, 2026. Snap deserves credit for saying plainly, on its own privacy page, that My AI chats work "differently than Chats and Snaps with your Friends" (Snap).

Does Snapchat save your My AI chats?

Yes, all of them. Snap's help center says "all the content you share with My AI is retained until you delete it," and that these stored chats "help My AI learn and improve over time" (Snap). That covers Snaps you send it as well as text (Snap).

This is the opposite of how Snapchat treats your friends. Its privacy policy says Snaps and Chats between friends are "deleted by default from our servers within 24 hours" after everyone has opened them (privacy policy). My AI messages disappear from your Chat screen after 24 hours too, which makes them look ephemeral. Snap's help page says the content "is displayed in Chat for 24 hours," while the server copy stays until you clear it.

The privacy policy adds that Snap's machine learning models "take into account the conversations Snapchatters are having with My AI to improve the responses from My AI" (privacy policy). Snap says My AI is "powered by Large Language Models like GPT models from OpenAI and Gemini models from Google" (Snap), and it shares information with "service providers and advertising partners" to provide My AI (Snap).

Does Snapchat use My AI chats for ads?

Yes, in two ways, and Snap offers no switch to stop either.

Your chats shape the ads you see everywhere in Snapchat. Snap uses what you share with My AI and your location "to personalize your experience, including ads" (Snap). The privacy policy gives its own example: if you "talk to My AI about your favorite espresso machine," Snap may show you coffee content (privacy policy). Its ads page lists My AI next to Stories, Spotlight, and Lenses as activity it uses to guess your interests (Snap).

Ads inside My AI send your question to advertising partners. Snap's ads page says these ads come from "Snap's advertising partners, rather than by Snap," and that those partners "receive your queries (if we determine there's commercial intent)" along with your age range, country and language, phone operating system, and IP address (Snap). Ask My AI who makes the best electric guitar, and a guitar maker's ad can appear.

Your chats with friends get different treatment. For Sponsored Snaps, Snap says "we do not use the contents of private communications you send to your friends to personalize your experience, make recommendations, or show you ads" (Snap), and My AI chats fall outside that rule.

The ad controls Snap lists are opt-outs for activity on other websites, audience lists from advertisers, third-party ad networks, and iOS tracking, plus a page to review and clear your "Lifestyle Categories" (Snap). None of them is a My AI setting. Snapchat+ doesn't change this. Snap says its Platinum Monthly Plan removes "Sponsored Snaps, Story and Lens ads" (Snap), and none of the My AI pages we read says any Snapchat+ plan changes how My AI chats are stored or used. Meta does the same with Meta AI chats on Facebook and Instagram; we cover that in is Meta AI private.

Does My AI know your location, even in Ghost Mode?

Yes, if Snapchat has your location. Snap says "if you share your location with Snapchat, then it will be shared with My AI, even in Ghost Mode," because Ghost Mode "limits sharing your location with friends, not with the Snapchat app" (Snap). My AI uses it for nearby recommendations, and it "may also mention your location" in replies, including in chats where you @mention it (Snap).

To make My AI forget your location, do both steps Snap gives:

  1. Turn off Snapchat's location permission on your phone. On iOS, open Settings, then Privacy and Security, Location Services, Snapchat, and choose Never. On Android, long-press the Snapchat icon, tap App info, Permissions, Location, and choose Deny.
  2. Clear your My AI data (below). Snap warns that after you change the permission, "your location data may still be cached."

Can parents see your My AI chats?

No. A parent in Family Center can see whether a teen has chatted with My AI and turn the teen's access on or off, but Snap says "trusted adults cannot see the content of your chats with My AI" (Snap). The switch is under Settings at the bottom of Family Center, labeled Disable My AI. With it on, Snap says "My AI will not store or process your teen's queries, nor reply to your teen's messages" (Snap). Apart from declining the Team Snapchat pop-up, it's the only control on the Snap pages we read that stops the storing instead of deleting afterward.

Teens have been the focus of regulators too. On January 16, 2025, the FTC said it had referred a complaint against Snap to the Department of Justice that "pertains to the company's deployment of an artificial intelligence powered chatbot, My AI," and "the allegedly resulting risks and harms to young users" (FTC). Those are allegations. As of October 23, 2026, the FTC's case page lists no filed complaint or court documents, and was last updated on the day of the referral (FTC).

How do you delete your My AI data on Snapchat?

Snap splits the controls, and no single button reaches everything.

  • A message from the last 24 hours: in your chat with My AI, long-press it and tap Delete (Snap).
  • Your whole 1:1 history: tap your profile icon, then the gear. On iOS, scroll to Privacy Controls, tap Delete Data, then Delete My AI Data. On Android, scroll to Account Actions and tap Delete My AI Data. Older Snap articles call these buttons Clear Data and Clear My AI Data, so look for either name (Snap).
  • Team Snapchat AI chats: deleting My AI data "does not delete stored Team Snapchat chat data." Go to Privacy Controls, Clear Data, Clear Conversations, and pick Team Snapchat (Snap).
  • Group chats with My AI: the My AI button "doesn't delete messages from group chats that include My AI" (Snap). Delete those messages in the group. In a group where My AI is a member, it "can read messages in the chat" and replies without being @mentioned; removing it removes it for everyone, for good (Snap).

Messages where you @mentioned My AI in a friend's chat are "stored until you delete them," and you can long-press each one to delete it (Snap). Unpinning My AI or tapping Clear from Chat Feed only hides the thread (Snap).

After you delete, Snap says it "can take up to 30 days" to remove the data from its servers. Its privacy policy adds that it "cannot promise that deletion will take place by a specific time," and may keep a copy under a court notice, after an abuse report or a flag by its systems, or "in backup for a limited period of time" (privacy policy). Ad interests Snap has already guessed from your activity sit in your Lifestyle Categories, which you review and clear on their own (Snap).

How Morse keeps your AI chats out of an ad system

Every problem above starts with your My AI chats sitting on Snap's servers, tied to your Snapchat account, inside an app that Snap says is "primarily supported by advertising" (Snap). Morse is a web app for adults with over 30 models, open and closed, and it's built the other way round.

  • Anonymous, to ask GPT or Gemini without the provider knowing it's you. My AI runs on GPT and Gemini models. On Morse, proprietary models like GPT, Claude, and Gemini run in Anonymous mode: our proxy removes your account, email, and IP address and sends the message under Morse's own account. The provider sees the question without knowing it's you, and may keep it for a limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy. Leave names and places out of the message itself.
  • Private, for questions you'd rather no host keep. It's the default for a new chat. Open-weight models like DeepSeek, Kimi, and GLM, plus Grok, run on hosts that agreed to keep nothing. Where a host confirms that on each reply, Morse checks it and refuses a reply that doesn't.
  • E2EE, for anything no one should read. Your browser checks the secure enclave's proof that it's genuine, then encrypts the message so only that enclave can open it. Morse's servers relay text they can't read. E2EE chats come with Pro, at $19 a month.

There's no ad partner on the other end of your question, because Morse doesn't show ads, sell your data, or train AI on your chats (Morse privacy policy). Your history is stored in your browser, encrypted, not on our servers, so deleting a chat on your device deletes it, with no copy on our servers to wait out. Morse can't recover it either, so save anything you need. For how other assistants handle the same questions, see are AI chats private and which AI companies train on your data.

Common questions

Does My AI forget what I told it last week?

It's not supposed to bring it up. Snap says it stores your My AI conversations, but "My AI won't remember details from your prior conversations with it over time." The stored copy still sits on Snap's servers until you delete it.

Can my friends see what I ask My AI?

Not your one-to-one chat. If you @mention My AI in a chat with friends, or start a group that includes it, everyone in that chat sees the question and the reply like any other message.

Are AI Sponsored Snaps the same as My AI?

No. Snap says an AI Sponsored Snap is an advertiser's own chatbot, "provided and managed by the advertiser, not by Snap." Your messages to it go to the advertiser's AI service and fall under the advertiser's privacy policy.

Does unpinning or removing My AI delete my data?

No. Snap's help page says clearing My AI from your Chat feed "does not delete data you've previously shared with My AI." Use the Settings steps above for that.
