Grok alternatives: fewer refusals, images, and no X account
The Morse teamPublished Facts checked 10 min read
The best Grok alternative depends on why you're leaving Grok: fewer refusals, a different image generator, a chat that doesn't run through your X account, or a company other than SpaceXAI, which has run Grok since SpaceX acquired xAI on February 2, 2026 (SpaceXAI). As of October 20, 2026, the short list is Morse, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Venice, and Mistral's Vibe (formerly Le Chat), and none of them is filter-free, so pick the one that draws its lines where you need them.
We read Grok's terms, acceptable use policy, plans, pricing, and product pages on October 20, 2026, then each alternative's own pricing and policy pages the same day. Grok earns credit for candor. Its consumer terms say plainly that, depending on the features and prompts you choose, it "may respond with some dialogue that may involve coarse language, crude humor, sexual situations, or violence" (SpaceXAI terms). For what Grok keeps and who can read it, see our teardown, is Grok private.
The short list
As of October 20, 2026. Prices are for one person, billed monthly.
| App | Best for | Privacy model | Free plan | Paid from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morse | Grok, GPT, Claude, Gemini, and open-weight models in one account, with unfiltered models on paid plans | History encrypted in your browser; a privacy mode per chat, including E2EE | 15 messages a day, 3 images a day | $19 a month (Pro) |
| ChatGPT | The widest set of tools, with images on every plan (OpenAI) | History on OpenAI's servers; logged-out chats "may be reviewed and used to improve our AI models" (OpenAI) | Limited messages and image creation | $8 a month (Go, "may include ads"), $20 (Plus) |
| Claude | Long writing, documents, and code (Anthropic) | History on Anthropic's servers; training depends on your setting | Chat, web search, files, and memory | $20 a month (Pro), $17 billed yearly |
| Gemini | Image generation and Google apps on the free plan (Google) | History in your Google account | Image generation and editing, with a Google account | $4.99 a month (Google AI Plus) |
| Venice | Grok and other models with history kept on your device (Venice) | History in your browser; four privacy modes by model | 10 text and 15 image prompts a day (Venice) | $18 a month (Pro) |
| Mistral Vibe | A non-US alternative with free image generation (Mistral) | History on Mistral's servers; trains by default unless you opt out (Mistral) | Limited messages, "Basic image generation and editing" | $14.99 a month (Pro) |
Why people look for a Grok alternative
Most of the reasons come from SpaceXAI's own pages.
People who hit a refusal. Grok's acceptable use policy, effective August 14, 2026, forbids "Jailbreaking, adversarial prompting, or prompt injection" and tells users "Don't circumvent safeguards unless you are part of an official Red Team or otherwise have our official written consent" (SpaceXAI AUP). Breaking it can cost you the account, so after a refusal, switch to a model whose rules fit your task.
People who want images. Grok Imagine makes images and video "up to 2K resolution and 15-second videos" (SpaceXAI). It has also changed under pressure. In January 2026, the Associated Press reported that Grok limited image generation and editing to paying subscribers on X after a global backlash over sexualized deepfakes of real people, and that an EU Commission spokesman said "Paid subscription or non-paid subscription, we don't want to see such images" (AP via WECT, January 11, 2026). The current policy bans "Undressing or nudifying real persons" outright, along with "Stripping, altering or circumventing embedded provenance metadata or watermarks" (SpaceXAI AUP), and the terms say SpaceXAI may apply a disclosure that content "was generated or altered by artificial intelligence" (SpaceXAI terms).
People without, or done with, X. If you sign in with X, SpaceXAI's terms say it may bring over your X profile "(including date of birth)" and your X post history (SpaceXAI terms), and is Grok private covers the rest of that transfer. Since October 12, 2026, new Grok plans come bundled with X Premium in The X Subscription, from $8 a month, whether you use X or not. Existing SuperGrok, Cursor, and X Premium subscribers can keep their current plan, or switch and get a prorated refund for the old one (SpaceXAI).
People who want a different company's rules. The terms now name SpaceXAI LLC, a Nevada company based in Austin, Texas, and were last updated October 12, 2026 (SpaceXAI terms). Using Grok without logging in grants SpaceXAI, "where permitted," "full rights to use any data you provide" for product development and model training.
Which Grok alternative fits your reason?
| Your reason for leaving | What Grok's own pages say | Where the alternatives stand |
|---|---|---|
| Too many refusals | Jailbreaking and circumventing safeguards are banned (AUP) | Morse's unfiltered models on paid plans answer more; Venice lets Pro and higher turn off its Mature Filter (Venice); Claude bans sexually explicit content (Anthropic) |
| Image generation | Imagine is in every paid plan from Plus; Premium adds "Make stunning AI images & videos" (pricing) | Gemini, ChatGPT, Vibe, Venice, and Morse all generate images on their free plans; Claude's plans list none (Anthropic) |
| No X account | X sign-in can bring your post history and date of birth (terms) | Morse and Venice run Grok's models with no X or Grok.com account (Venice) |
| A different company | SpaceXAI LLC, owned by SpaceX since February 2, 2026 (SpaceXAI) | OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Venice, Mistral, or Morse, which offers models from several of them in one account |
Is there a Grok alternative with fewer filters?
Yes, but fewer, not none. Every company on this page bans sexual content involving minors. SpaceXAI (AUP), OpenAI (OpenAI), Anthropic (Anthropic), Google (Google), and Mistral (Mistral) each ban non-consensual intimate imagery, and Venice's terms ban using anyone's "name, voice, image, or likeness without their consent" (Venice). Beyond that, their lines differ.
- OpenAI moved to "a universal set of policies across OpenAI products and services" on October 29, 2025. Its list bans "circumventing our safeguards" and "provision of tailored advice that requires a license, such as legal or medical advice, without appropriate involvement by a licensed professional" (OpenAI).
- Anthropic bans sexually explicit content (Anthropic).
- Google bans sexually explicit content "created for the purpose of pornography or sexual gratification," with possible artistic exceptions (Google).
- Mistral puts "Be neutral" first among its principles (Mistral).
- Venice lists "Private & uncensored" on its Free plan (Venice), but its FAQ says you can turn off the Mature Filter only "if you have a Pro plan or higher" (Venice).
The model usually decides whether you get an answer. In a multi-model app like Morse, when one model refuses a dark short story or a blunt question about a medication, you can ask another in the same account.
Can you use Grok without Grok.com or X?
Yes, through another app. Morse runs xAI's Grok in its Private mode, with no X or Grok.com account and zero data retention at the provider, covered below. Venice also runs Grok: its privacy page says its default Private mode offers "wide model selection (including Grok)" on "Venice-controlled GPUs or zero-data-retention partner infrastructure," and its public model list showed seven Grok models, up to Grok 4.7, all labeled private, when we read it on October 20, 2026 (Venice). Venice sells Grok Imagine for images too, paid with credits (Venice).
The top-ranking guides for "grok alternative" that we read list other chatbots and leave out this option of keeping Grok's model while leaving its account. They also predate October: one guide, last updated May 19, 2026, still lists "Mistral Le Chat," which Mistral renamed Vibe on August 12, 2026 (Mistral), prices ChatGPT Pro at $200 where OpenAI now lists $100 (OpenAI), and compares against X Premium rather than The X Subscription (Cabina).
1. Morse
Every reason above traces to one setup. On Grok, the model, the image generator, the rules, and the account all belong to one company, and the account is often your X account. Morse takes that apart. It's a web app that bundles over 30 models, open and closed, from OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, DeepSeek, Z.ai, Moonshot AI, Qwen, Black Forest Labs, and others, so you can keep Grok, switch to another lab's model for one chat, and never connect X.
- Private, to keep Grok and drop the X account. xAI's Grok runs in Private mode, the mode every new chat starts in. Our proxy removes your account, email, and IP address and sends the message under Morse's own account. Morse has zero data retention agreements with its inference, search, and other providers, so they keep nothing; where a provider confirms zero retention on each reply, Morse checks it and refuses a reply that doesn't.
- Unfiltered, for the questions other apps refuse. On paid plans, picking an unfiltered model gets answers other apps refuse: dark fiction, straight medical and legal answers, and help testing your own security. Unfiltered never covers anything illegal or sexual content involving minors, and Morse reports child sexual abuse material to NCMEC.
- Anonymous, for GPT, Claude, and Gemini under someone else's rules. The provider sees the message without knowing it's you, and may keep it for a limited time to check for abuse, under its own policy.
- E2EE, for anything no company should read. Pick an open-weight model like GLM, Kimi, or DeepSeek. Your browser checks the enclave's hardware attestation before anything leaves your device, and Morse's servers relay ciphertext they can't read. The enclaves are run by third-party providers, not by Morse, and the guarantee rests on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed. E2EE runs without web search or image generation, so make images in another mode.
For images, Studio generates them in the same account: 3 a day with Z-Image Turbo on Free, and unlimited Pro image models on Pro. Your chats and Studio images are stored in your browser, encrypted, not on Morse's servers. Morse doesn't train AI on your content, sell your data, or show ads (Morse privacy policy). Clearing your browser deletes your chats, and Morse can't recover them, so keep a copy of anything you need.
As of October 2026, Free is $0 with no card, Pro is $19 a month ($17 billed yearly) with E2EE chats, and Max $49. Morse is for adults only.
2. ChatGPT
ChatGPT has the broadest toolset here, with image creation on every plan, including Free. Go is $8 a month, and OpenAI says "This plan may include ads"; Plus is $20 and Pro $100 (OpenAI). You can chat without logging in, but creating an image needs an account, and the logged-out page says chats "may be reviewed and used to improve our AI models" (OpenAI).
3. Claude
Claude is the pick for long documents and careful writing. Free includes chat on web, desktop, and mobile, web search, file creation, and memory; Pro is $20 a month or $17 billed yearly, and Max starts at $100 (Anthropic). Its plans list no image generation, and you sign in with Google, Apple, email, or SSO (Anthropic). Anthropic's retention rules are in is Claude private.
4. Gemini
Gemini is the strongest free image option on this list: its Free plan includes "Image generation and editing" and "limited access to Nano Banana Pro," with a Google account. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and Google AI Pro $19.99 (Google). What Google keeps and reviews is in is Gemini private.
5. Venice
Venice keeps conversation history on your device and says it "never stores it on its servers" (Venice). Free has 10 text and 15 image prompts a day; Pro is $18 a month with unlimited text, 1,000 images a day, and 100 credits (Venice). Its strongest modes, TEE and E2EE, are Pro-only, and for GPT, Claude, and Gemini it tells you to "assume the provider is storing your content" (Venice). We compare it in depth in Venice AI alternatives.
6. Mistral Vibe
Vibe is the chat app Mistral called Le Chat until August 12, 2026, and your account, plan, and conversations moved over at the same address, chat.mistral.ai (Mistral). Free includes "Basic image generation and editing," and Pro is $14.99 a month (Mistral). Mistral says input and output are "used by default" to train its models unless you opt out (Mistral).
How we compared them
We read every page linked above on October 20, 2026, including Venice's model list through its public API, and took each company at its written word. We didn't test how often any model refuses, and we don't show sample outputs.
Choose Grok or Morse
- Choose Grok if you want live X posts in your answers, Grok Imagine's video at up to 15 seconds, native iOS and Android apps (SpaceXAI), or an X Premium plan bundled with your AI plan.
- Choose Morse if you want Grok without an X account, GPT, Claude, Gemini, and open-weight models in the same place for when one model refuses, unfiltered models on paid plans, and chat history that stays encrypted on your device.
Try a message from the Morse home page without an account, or start free and switch models when one says no.
Morse publishes this comparison. We've tried to keep it fair; if something's wrong or out of date, email hello@trymorse.ai.

Common questions
Is there a Grok alternative that runs Grok itself?
Yes. Morse runs xAI's Grok in its Private mode, and as of October 20, 2026, Venice lists seven Grok models in its own Private mode. You use Grok's model without a Grok.com or X account, under that app's privacy rules instead of SpaceXAI's.
Do I lose my SuperGrok plan if I switch to The X Subscription?
No. SpaceXAI says existing SuperGrok, Cursor, and X Premium subscribers can keep their current plan, or switch and get a prorated refund for the old plan.
Does Grok label the images it makes?
It can. SpaceXAI's consumer terms, last updated October 12, 2026, say you may be required to apply, or SpaceXAI may apply, a disclosure that content was generated or altered by AI, and its acceptable use policy bans stripping provenance metadata or watermarks.
Which Grok alternative makes images for free?
As of October 20, 2026, Gemini, ChatGPT, Mistral's Vibe, Venice, and Morse all generate images on their free plans: Venice allows 15 image prompts a day and Morse 3 a day with Z-Image Turbo. Claude's plans list no image generation.
