Duck.ai alternatives: why people leave, and who reads your prompt instead
The Morse teamPublished Facts checked 10 min read
Duck AI alternatives are worth a look once you run into one of Duck.ai's own limits: a daily allowance DuckDuckGo won't put a number on, larger models you can only get inside a subscription that also sells you a VPN, GPT and Claude providers that still read every prompt, and attachments and voice that leave Duck.ai's most private path. As of October 28, 2026, each app below answers at least one of those, with Morse first.
On October 28, 2026, we read DuckDuckGo's Duck.ai help pages, its Duck.ai privacy policy and terms (last updated October 1, 2026), and its subscription help and checkout pages, then each alternative's own pages, and took each company at its word; we ran no lab tests. Duck.ai earns credit before anyone leaves it. It asks for no account, strips your IP address before any provider sees a request, binds every provider not to train on your chats, and runs two free models where even their host can't read them. Our Duck.ai vs Lumo vs Brave Leo comparison covers its retention terms and enclave models in depth.
The short list, by reason for leaving

Why do people leave Duck.ai?
DuckDuckGo's own pages explain most of it.
Every model spends the limit at a different rate. DuckDuckGo's subscription FAQ says "there isn't a straightforward way to state an exact number of prompts users can send in one day," because each model costs a different amount per prompt (DuckDuckGo). Its usage page adds that long conversations can cost more, and advises keeping chats in "Fast" mode and saving reasoning for hard problems. Subscribers get a second meter, a weekly limit they can dip into once the daily one runs out, which resets every Sunday at midnight UTC (DuckDuckGo). Outside a subscription, you can't buy more. How the free allowance compares with other free tiers is in free private AI chat.
The larger models come in a bundle. As of October 28, 2026, DuckDuckGo's checkout page lists Plus at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and Pro at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year in the US (DuckDuckGo). Both include a VPN, Personal Information Removal, and Identity Theft Restoration alongside Duck.ai's larger models (DuckDuckGo). Asked whether you can pay for Duck.ai alone, DuckDuckGo answers, "we don't offer a way to only subscribe to one feature" (DuckDuckGo). The subscription is "for personal, individual use only," so a household can't share one (DuckDuckGo).
OpenAI and Anthropic still read your words. DuckDuckGo's subscription FAQ says "Model providers need to see your prompts in order for their models to provide responses," and that requests arrive looking as if they came from DuckDuckGo, with your IP address removed (DuckDuckGo).
History stops at 100 chats. Duck.ai keeps up to 100 recent conversations on your device (DuckDuckGo). Its optional Sync & Backup is covered in our three-way comparison.
The rules are the providers' rules. Duck.ai's terms mirror its providers' usage policies and bar anything "Sexually explicit or obscene," as well as "providing legal, financial, or medical advice," and they warn that "safety mechanisms may block certain Prompts" (DuckDuckGo). Moving to another relay for the same models keeps the same refusals.
Which Duck.ai models are free, and who reads each one?
DuckDuckGo publishes a cost tier for every model, saying how fast each one uses up your limit, and on a separate page a table of which provider handles it. We put the two together. As of October 28, 2026, from DuckDuckGo's model guide (DuckDuckGo) and its privacy page (DuckDuckGo):
| Model | Plan | Cost against your limit | Who reads the prompt | Exceptions DuckDuckGo lists |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mistral Small 4 | Free | Extra low | Mistral's model host | None |
| GPT-6 Luna | Free | Extra low | OpenAI | Held in memory up to 1 hour for prompt caching |
| gpt-oss-120b | Free | Extra low | No one at Tinfoil: it runs in a TEE | Uploaded files go to a moderation provider |
| Gemma 4 31B | Free | Extra low | No one at Tinfoil: it runs in a TEE | Uploaded files go to a moderation provider |
| GPT-5.4 mini | Free | Low | OpenAI | Up to 1 hour of prompt caching |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | Free | Medium | Anthropic | Prompt caching; kept where law requires or to fight misuse |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | Plus | High | OpenAI | Up to 1 hour of prompt caching |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Plus | High | Anthropic | Prompt caching; kept where law requires or to fight misuse |
| Claude Opus 4.8 | Pro | Extra high | Anthropic | Prompt caching; kept where law requires or to fight misuse |
| GPT-5.6 Sol | Pro | Extra high | OpenAI | Up to 1 hour of prompt caching |
Azure runs OpenAI and Anthropic models as a backup (DuckDuckGo). The free Claude model costs a medium amount per prompt, the most of any free choice, while the two Tinfoil models cost extra low. Pro adds "2x higher usage limits than Plus" and higher reasoning effort (DuckDuckGo).
Is Duck.ai really private?
Mostly, for your text, and less so for files, voice, and a sample of messages. DuckDuckGo's general privacy policy, last updated June 3, 2026, says it doesn't save your IP address alongside "Duck.ai chats" (DuckDuckGo). Its Duck.ai pages describe three paths where your content goes further.
Files you upload leave the encrypted channel. Duck.ai scans every uploaded image and file for child sexual abuse material through a third-party moderation provider, and for the Tinfoil models DuckDuckGo says "your uploaded images and files are sent to the third-party content moderation provider outside of the encrypted channel" (DuckDuckGo). The "zero provider visibility" label describes what Tinfoil can see, and a separate moderation company still receives your attachments. Files are kept only if flagged.
A sample of messages is read by a model for analytics. DuckDuckGo takes "a random sample of Duck.ai messages," sorts each into one of about 40 broad topics, and stores the topic with the hour, the model, your plan type, your platform, and your approximate country and language. The message itself is discarded, and the sorting is done by "the same model provider you are chatting with" (DuckDuckGo).
Voice goes to OpenAI, whichever model you picked. Voice chat streams your microphone audio to OpenAI in real time through a relay DuckDuckGo says it can't decrypt, and dictation sends recordings of up to 5 minutes to OpenAI for transcription. DuckDuckGo says neither company keeps the recording afterward and warns that "your voice is unique to you and can be a biometric identifier" (DuckDuckGo).
Can Duck.ai make images, read files, and share chats?
Yes to all three. Choose "New Image" to generate a picture and refine it with follow-up prompts, under its own daily limit (DuckDuckGo). Duck.ai reads images and PDFs on some models, up to 15 PDF pages on the free version, 35 on Plus, and 50 on Pro, and it doesn't take spreadsheets (DuckDuckGo).
Duck.ai also shares chats as encrypted links that expire after 48 hours by default, and not in the UK (DuckDuckGo); our page on AI chat share links sets them beside other apps' links.
1. Morse
For GPT and Claude, Duck.ai is a relay. Your words reach OpenAI or Anthropic in readable form, protected by a contract, and DuckDuckGo meters what each prompt costs without knowing who sent it. Morse lets you decide per chat whether any provider reads your words, and tells you up front how many messages you get.
- E2EE, for what you wouldn't send through Duck.ai's relay at all. Before a word leaves, your browser verifies the enclave's hardware attestation itself, comparing what runs there with the versions pinned in the Morse app. Only then does it seal the message for that one enclave. Morse's servers relay ciphertext they can't read, and the reply is unsealed on your device. Each E2EE reply has a lock icon listing every check that passed, with a report you can download. E2EE is part of Pro at $19 a month and uses open-weight models. Its guarantee rests on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed, and it skips web search and image generation, so switch modes for those.
- Anonymous, for the GPT and Claude you used on Duck.ai. Like DuckDuckGo, Morse strips your account, email, and IP address before the request goes out, then sends it as Morse, so OpenAI or Anthropic answers without knowing it's you. They do see the words, and may keep the message for a limited time to check for abuse, under their own policy, so write the prompt without your name or details that point to you.
- Private, for DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, and Grok, which Duck.ai doesn't offer. These run on hosts that agreed to keep nothing, because Morse has zero data retention agreements with its inference, search, and other providers. If a provider confirms zero retention on each reply, Morse looks for that confirmation and rejects any reply that lacks it. Every new chat opens in Private.
Morse takes Duck.ai's other limits in the same order. Free is 15 messages a day, a number you can plan around, with GLM 5.3 Flash, GPT-6 Luna, Claude Haiku 5.5, and more, plus 3 images a day and web search, and no card. Pro is an AI plan on its own, $19 a month or $17 billed yearly, with unlimited Pro models including Claude Sonnet 5.5, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, and Grok 4.7, unfiltered models, memory across chats, E2EE, and 250 credits a month for frontier models; Max is $49. Files you attach travel with the message, and Morse never stores them. Your chat history lives in your browser, encrypted, and unlocks only with a key that never leaves your device plus a second key our server hands over when you sign in. Morse doesn't train AI on what you write, doesn't sell your data, and shows no ads, and there are no advertising trackers or third-party analytics on the site (privacy policy). Because that history exists only in your browser, clearing it erases your chats beyond our reach, so copy out anything you'll want later.
2. Venice
Venice also puts GPT and Claude in one account, and it answers Duck.ai's unnumbered limit with 10 free text prompts a day; Pro is $18 a month (Venice). For its frontier models, Venice's own advice is that "you should assume the provider is storing your content," and "TEE and E2EE models require a Venice Pro subscription" (Venice). Its privacy policy says it uses analytics "such as Google Analytics" (Venice). We go through it in Venice AI alternatives.
3. Proton Lumo or Brave Leo
Both sell their AI on its own, without a VPN attached: Lumo Plus is $12.99 a month (Proton) and Leo Premium $14.99 (Brave). Lumo runs open models only, on Proton's servers (Proton). Leo needs no account (Brave) and offers one end-to-end encrypted model, GLM 5.3 Flash (Brave). Our Duck.ai vs Lumo vs Brave Leo comparison sets all three side by side.
4. Maple or Confer
If the reason you're leaving is that OpenAI and Anthropic read your prompts, Maple and Confer encrypt every chat into an enclave, and Maple's free plan includes it. Maple's price list runs open models, OpenAI's GPT-OSS 120B among them, but no Claude or GPT-5.x (Maple). Confer's privacy policy says all messages are "end-to-end encrypted before leaving your device" (Confer), and its App Store listing is free to download with a $34.99 Membership, for a period it doesn't state (App Store); the Confer pages we read don't name its models. Maple vs Confer compares their keys, checks, and prices.
5. A local app
LM Studio and Ollama run open models on your own computer, so no company sees the prompt; our guide to local AI vs cloud AI covers the trade.
Choose Duck.ai or Morse
- Choose Duck.ai if you want no account at all, Claude Opus 4.8 or GPT-5.6 Sol on Pro, or Claude Sonnet 5.5 on a $9.99 plan that also covers a VPN and identity theft help.
- Choose Morse if you want a free allowance with a number on it, GPT and Claude with your identity stripped, E2EE chats your own browser verifies, history encrypted on your device, and no ads or training, from $19 a month for E2EE.

Common questions
Why does Duck.ai say I've reached my limit as soon as I start?
DuckDuckGo says this can happen on a VPN or a cellular network, because of the way it enforces limits without knowing who you are. Its usage page suggests switching VPN locations or moving to Wi-Fi, and reporting it with Share Feedback if it keeps happening.
Does Duck.ai use ChatGPT?
It uses OpenAI's models, not the ChatGPT app. As of October 28, 2026, GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5.4 mini are free on Duck.ai, GPT-5.6 Terra comes with the Plus plan, and GPT-5.6 Sol with Pro, and the requests reach OpenAI from DuckDuckGo rather than from you.
Can I move my Duck.ai chats to another app?
The DuckDuckGo help pages we read on October 28, 2026 cover deleting, pinning, syncing, and sharing recent chats, but none describes an export. Copy out anything you want to keep before you switch.
Can I get the Duck.ai subscription outside the US?
Yes, in Canada, the E.U., and the U.K. as well as the US. DuckDuckGo says subscribers there sign up in the DuckDuckGo browser downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and the app store handles payment. Personal Information Removal stays US-only, but the larger Duck.ai models work in any browser.
