Chub AI alternatives: where your cards and chats end up
The Morse teamPublished Facts checked 9 min read
The best Chub AI alternative depends on which half of Chub you're replacing: the card library where people publish characters, or the chat front end that runs those characters on Chub's own subscription models. As of October 22, 2026, Morse fits if you want character chat with nothing to configure and your history kept encrypted in your browser, WyvernChat is the closest hosted library, RisuAI is an open-source front end with its own sharing site, and Backyard AI still has a free character hub but has paused new paid subscriptions.
We read Chub's terms of service, privacy policy, subscription page, moderation page, and its guide at docs.chub.ai on October 22, 2026, then each alternative's own pages the same day. Chub deserves credit first. Its policy says private characters and chats will never be "used for training an AI model" (Chub), and its guide says the data behind its own models "does NOT include public or private chats taken from Chub AI" (Chub). That's a firmer line than Character.AI draws, as our Character.AI alternatives comparison shows.
Chub AI alternatives compared, as of October 22, 2026
Every competitor row links to that company's own pages.
| App | Where the card library lives | Who stores your chats | Setup needed | What it costs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chub AI (for reference) | On chub.ai, where each character is public, private, or unlisted (Chub) | Chub, which accesses private chats "programmatically to provide the Services" (Chub) | An account, then a subscription or an API key entered under Secrets (Chub) | $20 a month, crypto only, after one-time trial credits (Chub) |
| Morse | Characters, inside the app; characters you make stay in your browser | Your browser, encrypted; Morse's servers don't keep messages (privacy policy) | None to try a message in Chat from the home page; an emailed code or Google to sign up and keep chats | Free with unlimited character messages; Pro $19 a month adds unfiltered models |
| WyvernChat | On app.wyvern.chat, with a cap on private characters for free accounts (WyvernChat) | WyvernChat, under a license to "host, store" your chats (WyvernChat) | An account; free models run in a queue (WyvernChat) | Free; $10, $25, or $50 a month through Featherless AI (WyvernChat) |
| RisuAI | RisuRealm, its sharing site (RisuAI) | Depends on the model you connect; its account policy covers sign-in details (RisuAI) | Open the web app or install it, then pick a model (RisuAI) | Free and open source; you pay any outside model provider (GitHub) |
| Backyard AI | Its Community Hub (Backyard AI) | Its privacy policy covers account and usage data and doesn't say where chats are kept (Backyard AI) | An account, on the web or its Android and iOS apps (Backyard AI) | Free, with 300 messages a week on its models; new paid plans "currently unavailable" (Backyard AI) |
What is Chub AI now?
Chub, which used to live at venus.chub.ai, is two products on one site. The first is a library of user-made character cards: each creator marks a card public, private, or unlisted, rates it SFW or NSFW, and tags it, and Chub hides characters with fewer than three tags from search (Chub). The second is a chat front end. Chub's guide calls the platform "uncensored" and says it doesn't restrict "in any meaningful capacity" which characters are posted or how you talk to them (Chub).
To chat, you connect a model. Chub's guide lists OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter, and NovelAI keys, plus Kobold or Ooba for a model on your own machine, alongside Chub's own subscription models (Chub). It also supports chat trees, lorebooks, and Stages, which are add-ons written by other people that run in a sandboxed frame inside the chat (Chub). The terms, last updated May 15, 2026, say the service is for people "at least 18 years old" (Chub). Its moderation page, last updated June 16, 2025, says "around a dozen tag moderators" make sure cards are tagged properly (Chub), and its 0.5.7 patch notes say "We are live on the iOS App Store again" (Chub).
What does Chub AI cost in 2026?
$20 a month, paid in crypto. As of October 22, 2026, Chub's subscription page offers one plan with "Unlimited access to all LLMs, including Soji 1.6T 60K," plus voice and image generation. It explains the payment rule under "Why Crypto-Only?": "The primary sources of censorship pressure for most websites are credit card companies and payment processors." "Unlimited" means one person: concurrent requests from the same account get an error, and signs of key sharing bring restrictions (Chub). The terms add that Chub "does not offer refunds unless explicitly granted" (Chub).
The free route is your own key or your own hardware. A local model is "Free if being hosted from your machine," and Chub's guide warns against free reverse proxies, whose operators "may enable logging, leak your information, and use stolen API keys" (Chub).
Guides disagree about Chub's free tier. SeaArt's July 6, 2026 roundup says Chub "cut free chats to 20 per day" (SeaArt), while AI Companion Guides, updated August 14, 2026, describes "a genuinely free tier" and paid tiers "named after planets and moons" (AI Companion Guides). Chub's own subscription page, read October 22, lists one $20 plan and says only that "One-time free trial credits amounting to a few dozen messages are sent out to new users regularly" (Chub). It gives no daily free allowance. Its guide still calls the plan Mars, at "$20 a month" (Chub).
Does Chub AI store your chats?
Yes. Its privacy promises cover what it does with them. Chub's policy says your private characters and chats "will only be accessed programmatically to provide the Services," "may not be plainly viewed by any agent or principle of Chub without express written permission from yourself," and will never be "distributed to a third party, unencrypted," or used for training (Chub).
Chub's no-logging promise covers less. The policy says: "If you use the API outside of the Chub UI, none of the content of the inputs or the outputs of queries made to the inference endpoints at *.chub.ai are at any point logged or stored." Even then it keeps a user ID, the time, the model, input and output lengths, and how long each request took (Chub). That covers Chub's models used from another app. Chats in Chub's own interface fall under the private-content rules instead, which describe Chub needing to "access, transform, and transmit your Private Content between Chub and yourself" (Chub).
As of October 22, 2026, the policy carries no date, gives no retention period, and doesn't say how long chats last after you delete them. The terms say changes "are retroactive and apply to any and all users, content and communications" (Chub). Sharing a chat publishes "an anonymized version" in that character's "shared public chats" section until you unshare it (Chub). Your email, Chub's guide says, is "used sparingly, only for password recovery and our subscription service" (Chub).
Can you take your Chub characters and chats with you?
Mostly. Chub's chat settings export a chat "as a JSONL (SillyTavern), PNG, or Text file" (Chub). For characters, the terms split two ways. You keep "any and all intellectual property rights" to private content. For anything you post publicly, you give CharHub a "perpetual, irrevocable worldwide license," which ends when you delete the file except for copies Chub has "already copied and sublicensed." Content you download from others is for "personal, non-commercial purposes" (Chub).
WyvernChat's terms are stricter. They ban using any "scraper, crawler, or other automated tool to access, query, copy, or monitor" its site, "including but not limited to character cards, chat logs, or model outputs" (WyvernChat).
1. Morse: characters and chats kept in your browser
Every promise in Chub's privacy policy is about chats Chub holds. Morse is a web app built so your character chats aren't on our servers to begin with.
Where Chub wants a subscription or a key under Secrets before the first reply, Morse needs neither. One account covers over 30 models, and the Free plan puts no cap on character messages, with the model picked for you. Your character chats, the characters you write, and your personas stay encrypted in your browser, and Morse doesn't train on them, sell them, or show ads; we walk through how that storage works in Janitor AI alternatives.
Chub's no-logging line covers its models only when you call them from another app, and a key you bring to Chub sends every message to that provider under its own terms. Morse's privacy modes are chosen per chat in Chat, so you decide how much the model's provider sees one conversation at a time. Private runs open-weight models, plus xAI's Grok, and Morse has zero data retention agreements with its inference, search, and other providers. E2EE, on Pro, has your browser verify a secure enclave run by a third-party provider and seal each message so only that enclave can read it. That guarantee rests on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed, and we explain the checks in end-to-end encrypted AI chat. Anonymous strips your account, email, and IP address before GPT, Claude, or Gemini answers, though the provider may keep a message for a limited time to check for abuse.
2. WyvernChat
WyvernChat is the nearest thing to Chub's library with a different payment setup. It's a hosted site, still labeled beta, with characters, lorebooks, worlds, and a free queue for its models. Its paid plans come through Featherless AI, which "powers WyvernChat's AI": Supporter at $10 a month for models "up to 32B parameters," Premium at $25 for any model size, and Flex at $50 in usage credits (WyvernChat). An October 1, 2026 announcement raised Supporter's limit to 35B, though the plans page still says 32B (WyvernChat). Free accounts get a capped number of private characters and lorebooks, raised for each one you publish (WyvernChat).
Its policy page says mature content is allowed if tagged, users must be 18 or older, and "WyvernChat does not retain user data after account deletion." Its terms give it a license to "host, store, display, adapt" what you create, chats included, to run the service (WyvernChat).
3. RisuAI
RisuAI is an open-source chat front end whose sharing site, RisuRealm, stands in for Chub's card library (RisuAI). You can use RisuAI's own backend or connect a model of your choice, and an outside model's provider reads every prompt.
4. Backyard AI
Backyard AI, from Ahoy Labs, Inc., offers "Fictional Text & Voice Chats With No Filters," free with no card, a Community Hub of characters, and Android and iOS apps (Backyard AI). As of October 22, 2026, its plans page says "New paid subscriptions and plan upgrades are currently unavailable," and offers 300 free messages a week on its models (Backyard AI). Its privacy policy, last updated October 29, 2024, lists names, emails, usernames, and log data among what it collects, keeps personal information "for as long as it is necessary," and doesn't describe how chats are stored (Backyard AI).
Other sites like Chub AI
Janitor AI comes first in most of the alternative lists we read, with its own free model and a proxy route; we cover its setup and storage in Janitor AI alternatives. Chub's chat exports are built for SillyTavern, a front end you install yourself, and Character.AI needs no setup at all; we weigh it against other companion apps in Character.AI alternatives.
How we compared them
We read every page linked above on October 22, 2026. Chub's site loads its pages in the browser, so we opened its terms, privacy policy, subscription page, and moderation page in a browser to read them. We took each company at its written word and didn't create accounts, pay for plans, or run chats on any of these services for this page.
Choose Chub AI or an alternative
- Choose Chub AI if you want its card library and fine control over prompts, presets, and Stages, you're fine paying $20 a month in crypto or bringing your own key, and you accept Chub keeping your private chats under a policy with no retention period.
- Choose WyvernChat if you want a hosted library with flat plans from $10 a month and a free queue, and you're comfortable with it storing your chats.
- Choose RisuAI if you want an open-source front end you can run anywhere, and you'll connect and pay for your own models.
- Choose Morse if you want character chat with nothing to connect, unlimited character messages on the Free plan, and chats stored encrypted in your browser instead of on a company's servers, with no training, selling, or ads.
Start free, since the Free plan has no cap on character messages, or send a message from the home page without an account first.

Common questions
Is Venus AI the same as Chub AI?
Yes. As of October 22, 2026, the old address, venus.chub.ai, redirects to chub.ai, and Chub's terms of service call the company "Chub (AKA CharHub)." Guides that say "Chub Venus" mean the same site.
Is Chub AI safe?
For the card library and add-ons, Chub has rules in writing: it's adults only, tag moderators check how cards are labeled, and Stages run sandboxed away from your keys. For your chats, the open point is storage, since Chub holds private chats under a privacy policy with no date and no retention period.
Does Chub AI have a phone app?
On iOS, yes: Chub's patch notes say it is back on the App Store. They don't mention an Android app, so on Android you use the website in your browser.
Can I bring my Character.AI characters to Morse?
Morse's /import page brings your Character.AI characters, chats, and personas into Morse, free on every plan, with an exporter that runs only in your browser. Characters you make in Morse are stored in your browser, encrypted.
