AI Dungeon alternatives, compared on who can read your adventures

The Morse teamPublished Facts checked 8 min read

The best AI Dungeon alternatives, as of November 2, 2026, are NovelAI for long stories saved under a key only your password unlocks, KoboldCpp for text adventures that never leave your computer, KoboldAI Lite for a free AI Dungeon-style Adventure mode in the browser, and Morse for characters and unfiltered models in a web app that keeps your history encrypted in your browser.

We read AI Dungeon's privacy policy, terms of service, membership page, model guide, and its help center's privacy and incident pages on November 2, 2026, then each alternative's own pages the same day. Latitude keeps a frank record of its own mistakes in its help center, says no human moderates unpublished stories, and leaves its AI training setting off by default.

What changed in AI Dungeon's privacy policy on October 25, 2026?

Latitude added a marketing section. The policy, now "Last Revised on 25 October 2026," says Latitude may "share limited account information, such as a hashed version of your email address, with advertising partners to help show you relevant ads for our products" (AI Dungeon). It adds, "We do not share your stories or gameplay text for this purpose." To opt out of "customer-list advertising," you email support@aidungeon.com or use the unsubscribe link in a marketing email.

We compared the live policy with the Internet Archive's copy from October 2, 2026, which was "Last Revised on 25 September 2023" (Internet Archive). The marketing section is the new text. The rest still lets Latitude share data with "data analytics vendors," in "an asset sale, merger, bankruptcy, or other business transaction," and with law enforcement, and it still states no retention period. The "AI Dungeon alternatives" guides we read on November 2 don't cover privacy at all, and the newest we found was last checked in September 2026, before this change (BladeRPG).

Does AI Dungeon read your private stories?

Latitude says no human does, with one exception you control. Its help center answers, "No. The team does not read or otherwise modify your unpublished content," and says Latitude reads player inputs only with permission, for support or feedback (AI Dungeon). Private is the default visibility. A developer may need a Feedback ID, which you generate yourself with Report an Issue, to open a broken adventure (AI Dungeon).

Its moderation page says "Unpublished, single-player content is never moderated," while published stories and scenarios follow its Community Guidelines and pass an AI rating check first (AI Dungeon). Latitude also explains why it holds your encryption key: "server side storage of encryption keys best serves the needs of players," because it can restore your stories after a forgotten password (AI Dungeon). Every story still reaches the model as plain text.

Does AI Dungeon train on your stories?

Not by default, according to its help center. If you turn on Improve the AI, which is "off by default," your story text "may be used to improve future model quality" (AI Dungeon). The setting logs inputs and outputs anonymously, and the data "may be published as part of an ongoing dataset collection project" (AI Dungeon). Publishing needs a second opt-in, and Latitude says it filters addresses and phone numbers first, but "any names used in the original adventure will remain the same" (AI Dungeon). The toggle is under the gear icon, Gameplay, AI Models, then Testing & Feedback.

The terms are broader than the help center. Latitude's terms, last revised April 22, 2026, say "we may use your inputs and outputs to operate, maintain, improve, and train our AI and Services, subject to any choices or controls we may make available to you" (AI Dungeon). The privacy policy says nothing about training either way. Improve the AI is the only training control we found, so check that it's off.

Is AI Dungeon for adults only?

Its two documents disagree. The privacy policy says "Users must be 18 or older to use the Services" (AI Dungeon). The terms say "You must be at least 13 years of age," with "certain features" limited to users who have reached the age of majority (AI Dungeon).

What happened to AI Dungeon's privacy before?

Latitude tells this history in its own help center:

DateWhat happenedSource
Early 2021OpenAI, then AI Dungeon's only model provider, changed its content policy, and Latitude launched a filter it calls "poorly executed," with manual moderation of player storiesAI Dungeon
April 15 to 19, 2021A reporter used an API vulnerability to access data as a "proof of concept" before disclosing itAI Dungeon
May 27, 2021About 100 story clippings appeared on 4chan, posted by a contractor at a company working for OpenAI's data labeling vendorAI Dungeon
August 2021Latitude ended manual moderation, after players called it "an invasion of privacy"AI Dungeon
August 15, 2022People used a key from an unsecured endpoint to reach a backup of model inputs and outputs from a 54-minute window on December 13, 2021AI Dungeon

After the 2022 incident, Latitude deleted its backups of model request data and stopped storing that data unless players opt in. It also said it would "consider" an option for end-to-end encryption with a key on your device. As of November 2, 2026, its encryption page still says it "may consider" it.

Why look for an AI Dungeon alternative?

Usually context, price, or the cloud. The free Wanderer tier gives 4k tokens of context, and 32k takes Mythic at $49.99 a month, or Ultimate at $99.99 for "and beyond" with credits (AI Dungeon). Its Shadow Tiers go further, at prices Latitude itself calls "uncomfortable" (AI Dungeon). It needs an account and can't be played offline (AI Dungeon). Its models include in-house fine-tunes of Mistral NeMo, Llama 3.3, and Gemma 4, plus DeepSeek and GLM models (AI Dungeon).

1. Morse

Every AI Dungeon question above comes back to your adventures sitting on Latitude's servers, next to the key that opens them. Morse keeps your history off its servers instead.

Morse is a web app at trymorse.ai with over 30 models, open and closed, and Characters for roleplay and companion chats. Your chats, and the characters you write, are stored in your browser, encrypted, and locked when you sign out. Unlocking them takes two keys, one that never leaves your device and one Morse's server gives you at sign-in. Morse doesn't train AI on what you write, sell your data, or show ads, so there's no training toggle to find. Clearing your browser deletes your chats for good, and Morse can't recover them either, so copy any chapter you want to keep into your own files.

  • Characters, for adventures with a cast. The Free plan includes unlimited character messages, with the model picked for you. Pro runs character chats on any included model.
  • Unfiltered models, for the dark turns a dungeon takes. On Pro and Max, an unfiltered model writes the grim fiction other apps refuse. We explain what that means in what is an uncensored AI model.
  • Private, for open-weight models on hosts that keep nothing. Morse has zero data retention agreements with its inference, search, and other providers.
  • E2EE, for a chat no one else should read. In an E2EE chat, your browser checks a secure enclave's hardware attestation, then encrypts each message so only that enclave can read it, and Morse's servers relay text they can't read. It runs open-weight models, with no web search or image generation, and rests on the enclave hardware and attestation working as designed. The enclaves are run by third-party providers, not by Morse. See end-to-end encrypted AI chat.

Pro is $19 a month, or $17 billed yearly, and adds E2EE chats and unfiltered models.

2. NovelAI

NovelAI made the opposite choice on keys. Its privacy policy, effective September 10, 2026, says it saves stories encrypted with a key derived from your password and can't recover that password if you lose it (NovelAI). Plans run from $10 to $25 a month (NovelAI), and we cover the rest in NovelAI alternatives.

3. KoboldCpp

KoboldCpp is the one option here that plays offline, which AI Dungeon can't. It runs open models on your own computer and writes in an adventure mode, alongside chat, story, and instruct modes, with memory, world info, and author's notes (GitHub). Download KoboldCpp only from its GitHub releases or koboldcpp.net, then pick a model yourself.

4. KoboldAI Lite on the AI Horde

KoboldAI Lite is a single web page with an "Adventure Mode," which its README describes as "AIDungeon styled interactive fiction" (GitHub). At lite.koboldai.net it runs free on the AI Horde, a network of volunteers' computers run by a Luxembourg non-profit. Read the Horde's privacy answer before you write anything personal. Asked whether workers can see your prompts, it says "Technically, yes," because the code runs "on someone else's computer," though workers "cannot see your user ID, username, or IP address" (AI Horde). Its advice is to "always request generations as if you were posting in a public forum." We look at KoboldAI Lite as a character front end in SillyTavern alternatives.

How we compared them

We read every page linked above on November 2, 2026, and compared AI Dungeon's privacy policy with the Internet Archive's October 2 copy line by line. We took each company at its written word and didn't create accounts, pay for plans, or play adventures for this page. For character-first apps, see Character.AI alternatives.

Choose AI Dungeon or an alternative

  • Choose AI Dungeon if you want its community scenarios, Latitude's own fine-tuned adventure models, and password recovery for your stories.
  • Choose NovelAI if you want long stories saved under a key only your password unlocks.

Common questions

Is there a free AI Dungeon alternative?

Yes. KoboldAI Lite runs free in your browser on the AI Horde's volunteer computers, and KoboldCpp is free to run on your own. NovelAI offers only a free trial, and Morse has a Free plan with unlimited character messages.

Is AI Dungeon owned by OpenAI?

No. AI Dungeon is made by Latitude, Inc. OpenAI was its only model provider in early 2021, and Latitude says OpenAI "is no longer our primary AI provider."

Can you get your stories back after deleting an AI Dungeon account?

No. Latitude's terms say "Deleted accounts and content associated with deleted accounts cannot be recovered," so copy out any adventure you want to keep first.

What is Voyage, and is it the same account as AI Dungeon?

Voyage is Latitude's other game, with shared multiplayer worlds. Latitude's terms say one account covers both, so leaving AI Dungeon for Voyage keeps you under the same company's policies.
